Wow, there is a plethora of information on here and I can clearly see that people have varying opinions on heating options.
While I do not have a serious, dedicated "shop" as some of you do. My garage provides daily duty and workshop. This past year I upgraded the lights based on recommendations here and added some stairs for the attic. The garage is well insulated on all sides except for the ceiling which is on the list. But, in the short term I looking to get some much needed heat. I already have a 220v outlet in the garage with gas nearby but not run. The garage is roughly 21'x30' and 9'6" ceiling height with 1/3 of the garage covered by more house and not attic.
I received for FREE this unit http://www.commercial.carrier.com/commercial/hvac/product_physical_data/0,3060,CLI1_DIV52_ETI2352_PRD478,00.html, but my wife won't let me use the windows in the front of the house or cut a hole in the garage.
My other option is a REZNOR UDAP75, for close to FREE, but i would have to run a gas line.
My third option would be something from http://www.infratech-usa.com/comfort/products/wdseries.php which I can get at cost.
I am looking for something that can keep the garage around 50F or so all winter long and then up to 60 or so when I need to work out there. Keep in mind this will be through multiple garage door openings during the day. So, I am looking for quick recovery.
I am so torn as to what will be the best. I realize that has various connotations for cost, both long term and short. Please understand that they are all roughly the same in terms of install cost to me. I am also concerned with gas heaters due to most of my work being automotive which would include welding and grinding and other flammable liquids/gases.
Enough babbling...
Any help would be appreciated, I just need a direction and go with it.
