Heating size

I'm looking to replace my old natural gas heater in the garage/workshop with a new unit - probably a Big Maxx, which I'll buy either at Princess Auto (pickup) or mail order from somewhere.

My question is which Big Maxx heater would be best? The 45K unit heats 700 sq feet and the 75K unit is rated to heat 1000 sq feet. My space is just over 800 sq feet. I don't know enough about heating units. Is it better to go with something a little under-rated or something a little over-rated?

I live a little north of Toronto, Ontario and like to use the garage/shop year-round. It's insulated and well lit inside.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

My .02 cents... I'd buy the smaller one as long as your garage is well insulated.

I bought an 80K radiant tube heater for my shop... I heat 1100 sq. ft. ... way too big. I can weld under the heater when it's turned up. I should have bought a 60K... costs less to run, too.

Search this board for "heat loss calc" there are numerous online calcs that'll give you a rough idea of how many btus you'll need. I prefer the pencil and paper method found here: http://www1.modine.com/publications/litsearch.php?srchcrit=heat+loss&s1=Go

My 24x30x10 came out to 26,000 btu with a 95* temp difference and 1 air change per hour.

Thanks for your comments Krooser. I think the best advise is from someone who's been there - done that. I appreciate the help...

And thanks Pat for the link to Modine. I down-loaded the tables and I'll try to crunch some numbers. Again, I appreciate the help...

I would also be interested in anyone's comments on Mr. Heater products - the Big Maxx specifically.
