Heatpump continues to run after inside fan shuts off

I have a Carrier heatpump system.

The other week, I noticed the interior blower fan would not always coming on when the heatpump started. I was thinking it was a relay on the inside, however, my internet search provided no conclusive answers. Called a local HVAC company. The tech came out and identified the following 1. thermostat was bad because the fan would not turn on when the fan switched was switched to "on", 2. The outside capacitor needed replacing beacause it was bloated. 3. The interior fan needed replacing because it was dirty (and most likely the cause of the intermittent operation).

Due to the cost provided by the tech to fix everything, I continued my research and decided to replace the capacitor for the interior blower fan. I have not done anything else yet.

Now the interior blower fan comes on with the heat-pump, however the interior blower fan shuts off after maybe two minutes, and the heatpump continues to run for a few more minutes. I have not yet replaced the thermostat or the outside capacitor.

that was my thought.... my Lennox system will go though a cycle every once in a while.

I have a bryant heat pump and it will continue to run outside while in the defrost mode. It sounds totally different while doing this.

That might be it. It just went through what appeared to be a normal cycle. Am in VA, temp outside is in the 40s. I might have been impatient having just installed the capcitor. Let me observe over the course of the next day and get back to you all.

Alright two days later, the inside blower fan appears to be having a very short cycle (maybe 2 to 3 minutes) compared to before (when it was working properly). When the fan does come on it blows very strong, so I am ruling out a bad blower fan motor.
I am going to replace the thermostat (as per above the blower fan does not come on when switched from "auto" to "on", but am thinking it is something else, maybe a bad relay or board? Not sure how to test those.


I have noticed the fan comes on when in Auxilliary Heat mode consistently, however, still for a short time.

Does the fan come back on after it shuts off? I'm wondering if it has an internal overheat switch that kills it, and then resets itself.

The fan stays shut off after the initial go, until the next cycle comes around.

I am sure this is apples to oranges but my Bryant with Puron cycles to aux heat it's like someone just hit the nitrous switch on the fan motor. During heat pump operation it is very slow. When I switch my fan from auto to on, it's very faint output.

Update - Repaced the thermostat with a new Honeywell RTH7500 series. Now the inside blower fan comes on (solved my original problem - apparently I had a bad thermostat) when heat is called for, but the heatpump does not come on.
Not sure if I wired it or programmed it incorrectly. Had C, R, W2, E, Y, O, and G wires
Moved the wires accordingly
C-C
R-R
W2-W2/Aux
E-E/Y2
Y-Y
O-O/B
G-G
Tagged all the wires per the instructions.

Think maybe I selected the wrong "System Type" when programming.
Selected - Heat/Cool Multiple States: 2 heat stages (wires on W and W2), 2 cooling stages (wires on Y and Y2).

Just checked... There is heat coming out of the vents, but it is from the secondary heating, rather than from the coils)

Question - The temperature is 29 F outside. Is the outside compressor/fan supposed to come on to heat, or only the auxilliary heating?

I'd call the service company that told what was wrong the first time and ask him, my guess is he wont help again with a free estimate. I think you figured that out being that you have 6 posts and there is six posts on this thread.

Thanks for your input, I was just trying to be detailed as I know these devices have their individual peculiarities on how they work and are controlled. All service calls in my area are about $85.
