Heavy duty garage shelving

I would like to outfit the garage with some heavy duty shelving. Was in Costco today and saw 4 shelf Whalen system that was very strong. I believe 2000# per shelf. I don't have that kind of weight but it's nice to know that I could basically put my stuff anywhere and it would hold.

After looking around a bit, I noticed the Costco shelving that is used for their stuff. I like the fact that it is very tall (I have 16' ceilings in part of the garage) and sturdy also.


Can this type of shelving (similar to Home Depot's also) be gotten for the homeowner? How pricey is it? Any brands to check out?

Go to Sams Club, they have some shelving that could hold a car. I saw some that looked like a small parking garage--seriously.

Review "1" states it can hold 4,000 lbs. Look like you've found what you need by a factor of 2. Now stack 'em twice as deep!

Searching Craigslist in larger cities, you can find the style of shelving Costco uses to hold their merchandise.
I traveled to Portland, Oregon and picked up used storage racks. 35.00 for each 8' upright, 8' shelving was 16.00 each (need 2 per shelf) and 12' shelving was 25.00 each.

Google "pallet racks" and look at the images. That might be what you want, if you've got the space for them.

I used Gorilla racking in my garage for several years until I finished it off inside. I forget the rating but each shelf can easily hold several hundred pounds. Took one section and made a very heavy duty work bench out of it.

Pallet racking is a great way to go. I bought this set used on Craigslist. It is 12'X12' 3ft deep and I paid around $240.00.

You can get these from restaurant supply shops. You'll need to buy the shelves and poles separately but you have a lot of flexibility on how you configure your shelves. The chinese knock offs are good enough.

Used Pallet Racking is what you want, that is the ultimate in strength.

We got lucky and bought a whole row of Home Depot shelving when one went out of business in NH. Resellers gobble it up quickly though, and warehouse it, you should be able to find some in your area via craigslist.

The Home Depot uses a Tear Drop design, not sure if they are all standard, I could get the name off the racks at some point if there's any interest. (edit) actually, I guess the next time anyone is in that store I guess you could just take a look.
