Heavy duty old drill press

I found another sturdy looking drill press. It goes up for auction this AM, but I haven't decided if I want it or not. It's German, made by Cordia, circa 1970. Geared head with RPM's from 115 to 1750. Three phase, roughly 700 (!) pounds. As usual, moving it would be a challenge.

Moving it is easy.

Moving it without damaging it is the tricky part.

Remove head. Lower table. Move as two pieces. You may need a fork lift or gantry Craine though.

An engine hoist and a nylon lifting strap is all you need. Lift the head off and put the table to the ground.

It wound up going for $250, plus taxes and buyer's premium, which add another 25%, so over $300 out the door. Probably worth it, but not to me. I have Bridgeport mill, which drills anything I need drilled. This morning, the bid was only $60, so I was tempted.

That would be perfect in our weld shop.
The really long spindle travel would also be perfect for some of our wood jobs.

Hey Mush, I was the bidder that won that drill press! I've spent ages tooling around the internet trying to find more info on it and found your post

I've been after a bigger drill press for a while and buying this will save me having to move my Walker Turner WT900 up from Texas when my family moves up here next summer. Sorry you didn't get it, but boy it would have been nice to get it for $60

Well it looks like a high quality machine and in great condition. Table is excellent, no arc of shame.

fingers crossed! I'll find out next Wednesday when I pick it up. I appreciate the tip about removing the head, hopefully the forklift guy will be able to help me with that. Not sure if I'll be putting a VFD on it or building a rotary phase converter, depends on what I do with a large mill I'm also getting

Thanks, I'm really excited about it. I'll be able to use my tapping head on it too as it has a proper morse taper.

Also depends on the drill motor, quite often this type of machine will use a two speed motor (sometimes 4 speed) to get more speeds with less gear changes, in which case the VFD is out if you want to have all the speeds, though you can wire it to use the high motor speed and slow it on the VFD.

that's a good point, I'll only find that out when I get there. I have a feeling it's a one speed motor, just going by the info plate as they usually list two hp/ kw values for two speed motors and this only has one.

I'm leaning towards a vfd to get fine control, braking and reverse, then using the gears to select the range of speed that I want to use. That's sort of how I have my WT set up with a DC motor, though I usually leave it in the middle belt speed unless I'm drilling big or tiny holes.

Picked it up yesterday. The plan of removing the head at the auction yard didn't work as I didn't realize there was a small bolt holding the head on. Once I figured that out it wasn't too bad to get off the trailer. Got a work out though, it is HEAVY. Not going to be able to do much with it until we move into a house up here next summer. Can't wait to get it up and running though.
