Heavy duty shelving

These metal shelves were hanging in the garage when we bought the home. They measure 6' x 17" deep by 13" (high at the ends). They have 3 channels underneath which apparently help strengthen them. They must weigh about 50 lbs apiece. Just wondering if these were industrial shelves and why would they need to be so strong. We don't need anything this strong so we plan to sell or scrap them.

If that is not a slide on the sides, I would say it is library or records (think medical records) shelving. Some shelving will have the lip on the back while others will be open, depending on preference. With the lip I would say it is more likely to have come from a public library (smaller books, less likely to need the additional room). I have seen them in smaller stores on occasion, but for the absurd price, few outside libraries would purchase them new.

They are that strong because paper weighs a ton. By ton I mean each section of shelving can quite literally weigh nearly a ton (size of shelving, paper type, book size, etc.) Most multi-level libraries have floor requirements not seen much outside industrial spaces.

I think they are for storing data or film tapes. We used some thing similar where I used to work. Tapes are heavy.

My old company was moving to a new warehouse and we had too many of these shelves. I called up a buddy and we loaded his trailer with 8 of these units.

Wow if it was me I would find a way to use them, as has been stated shelves are never too strong.

I have to agree with the lateral file. They look just like what my wife has in her office.
