I have subscribed to this post lot's of good information, are there knives to avoid like cheap Chinese junk that I should be aware of? Any good names to keep my eyes open for?

What's your intended use & budget? Folder or fixed blade?
I like to stick with well made USA made products if possible, so Buck immediately comes to mind. If you're just looking for factory made, you can't go wrong with them. Most of their knives are still made in the US (Idaho) & their customer service is top notch should you ever have an issue. They have a very good selection of fixed or folders. You can't go wrong with a 110 folder.....their bread & butter knife.
I also like Case & older US made Schrade knives before they closed their doors some years back. I have no problem finding the older Schrades at gun shows or ebay. Ontario knives is also another good company that comes to mind.
These are just a few....there's plenty out there to meet whatever your needs are & best of all, avoid Chinese made if you wish to. We don't have that choice with a lot of products today, but fortunately knives isn't one of them.

For a big *folder* hard to go wrong with Emerson. Some will suggest Strider but I wouldn't buy from them, DAGS on Mick Strider and then see if you still find their products appealing or not.

I can relate with the vices....glad to help. :lol_hitti
PM me if you want a few names of the makers who stood out when I went to bladeforums just about every day for 3-4 years. It's been about a year since I've been there, so I'll have to see which of those favorites are still there.

LOL I still have some thinking to do on which route I want to go, but we'll see what happens.
