Lifting a garage wall back onto its slab is an often-discussed problem.

Realizing that many of G J readers are doing it alone DIY people often requires a different way of doing things.

Do you remember your high school phics classes?

This is how an often by himself pro does it

Scott Wadsworth has 2 youtube channels, one of them being the Essential Craftsman.

Let me see if I can find the video where he did this lift.

My various hydraulic jacks typically make short work of something like this without breaking a sweat.

Ive done structural termite repair ( replacing floor joists ), lifting the main beam in houses with large automotive floor jacks, and large bottle jacks.. Ive also leveled large settled decks the same way.

I keep trying to tell people that ancient Egyptians could do half this stuff with five minutes of thought. Physics and geometry are incredibly important in life.

When someone can't figure things like that out... I generally won't help. They've almost always lived long enough to have zero excuse.

Life is about learning, but if you haven't learned the utility of simple machines in sixty damned years, keep screwing up for all I care.

Yes, Ive also been using 2x4's and larger as jacks, as shown. I saw his vid on youtube a couple years ago, that's when I learned it was a thing, and not my idea !!

Ive been a one man show most of my life,... not sure how bottle jacks are a two man operation ?

How so? One hand jacking a temp screwed in 4x4 and other hand holding beer.

No kidding. Stick a $15 bottle jack in there along with a 4x4 post cut to length and it'll go up easy. Use the same vehicle that pushed it out in the first place to push it back in place.

I did that a little differently when I was backing a utility trailer in the wooded section of our property. I managed to back the end of the rear bumper into a small tree trunk bending the outer 8-9 inches of bumper forward. Pissed me off at the tree. (I got to blame something when I screw up right?) So I used the same tree and a rope to pull the bumper end back into position.

With a bottle jack and 4x4 you have to be sure the 4x4 is plumb to avoid it "kneeing."
That is one man with a level and the other working the jack
This way being plumb is not so important.

Still not a two man operation. You can check the level with every pump with one person. It's not like a bottle jack is going to move it so far with each pump that two people are required to keep it from getting out of plumb too quickly.

Two of us recently lifted the 60ft wall of a 100+ year old barn with several bottle jacks and screw jacks due to settling and deterioration of the original foundation. This building was out of plumb as well before we started and we use chains and come alongs to get things closer to square/level/plumb before we let the framing members go back to bearing weight.
