Height to mount Gladiator cabinets at?

Hey all,

I have two work benches that are around 36" tall. What height is good to mount cabinets at over them? Or just in general? They are the 30" Gladiator brand.

That's pretty much a personal decision based on factors such as your height, arm reach, desired space above bench tops, etc. I mounted mine so that I could reach the top shelf without issues, but I don't have a bench underneath to consider.

House cabinets (standard 30" tall units), usually mount the top at 6'-8" to 7'-0". I mount my wall cabinets in the garage at the same height, 7'-0" in my case. I can barely reach to slide something on top of the cabinets (I'm only 5'-6") and can reach items on the top shelf inside the cabinets. That is ultimately the goal, make them a height you can use, if you plan to use the tops for storage of things you plan to use frequently, make that height one you can reach. Same thing for shelves, if you plan to keep things on a shelf you want to access without dragging out a ladder every time, make the shelf a height you can reach.

I'm planning to put some fluorescent lights under the cabinet. The light I'm using requires at least 2.5' above the bench for good light spread

you can use the top of cabinets for storage if high ceilings
if small objects, may want to keep lower to be able to reach them
lights under it, higher means more room, better spread, not blast of light at, or near eye, level
want more room if drill press, vise, grinder, etc on bench so you can maneuver objects around

Just using them as cabinets, no lights underneath because I have no electrical run over there unfortunately.

Actually they used my garage for their catalog .......... LoL

I live 5 min from the Can/US border. I would wait until what I needed went on sale at Sears and bring them back one at a time, until I had my set up. This also saved me paying any extra tax and duty at the border returning to Canada.

They have been great cabinets and tool boxes. As well it keeps my small 2 car garage well organized.

hi sarman, that's a good looking setup you have there.

I'm looking into getting the garageworks stuff for my (soon-to-be) double-garage as well (as I get a steep discount for them).

What do you think of their quality? I will be looking at really only getting their premier line (which I see you have), as I want sturdy welded construction for my cabinets.

Also, what do you think of their wall-mount system? Is it worth putting up the wall-mount stuff and hanging the cabinets, or is it easier to simply hang them on drywall or concrete?

The quality is there, as well as strength from the welded construction.

I basically only ran the wall system the width and hight of the cabinets. And it only goes down as far as the top of the workbench. It's nice to have the wall system under your cabinet and above your bench, for selves (which you can rearrange) and bins.

I have also ran the track the whole length of the garage on the other side about 3 feet down from the ceiling. To show my vintage oil cans and other collected items.

The 8' workbench is great and very solid. A must is the power bar that mounts on the back.

A little bit pricey ( keep an eye out for sales), worth the money in the long run.

Take your time and plan, plan , plan ..........

Hey Pipsters,

Here is a picture of my set up. I'm 5'6" tall and it works great for me. I can reach the top shelf just fine and they still look proportionate. The cabinets are great quality for the weekend warrior like myself. I purchased them at Lowes here in Canada and waited until Fathers Day to make the purchase as they were half price.

I have mine probably higher than most, I didn't want to interfere with my paint stripes plus being 6'2" I decided to go higher.

I actually don't open mine all that often (they store a lot of stuff) so I keep them a bit higher to make the shop feel more "open". I have a 72" tall floor cabinet I got of CL and in the sake of uniformity I basically mounted them so the bottoms are flush with the top of that cabinet.

The floor cabinet and tool box keep everything that I use on a regular basis. I still need 3 more 30" cabinets to get across the back wall then it will be perfect!

well, i am trying to figure out how how as well. i did a mock up using the workbench that will be under them and blocks of wood.

all of my benches and such are on wheels. i dont like ones that are stationary. i am putting a steel top, vise and grinder on the bench that is shown there.

i have 5 of the gladiator 30" wall cabinets that i will mount on the gladiator wall rails.

the mockup has them at 62" to the bottom of the cabinet. i am 6ft 2 in.

my workbench is right at 40 inches.

i know it is personal preference, but looking for any other guidance you guys might have.

You might rethink that, I used the LED stick on tape on the bottom forward edge of my Gladiator cabinets to light up the work surface on my workbench. I'll take a picture of it when I get home today and add it to this thread. I have two strips connected to a power supply and a remote switch, really happy with the light provided and convenience.
