Found this on Craigs list http://denver.craigslist.org/tls/4837269900.html what can you guys tell about it. Is this one of the old USA made jacks worth pursuing? I think it is a GH-1 model after looking online at schematics of Hein werner G, GG and GH-1 4 ton floor jacks. Seller dosn't know much about the jack (age, etc) and the sticker with the model and serial number is pretty much gone, so not able to verify any of the info that is normally on the data tag.

Enrare,
I'm new to this business of jacks but it looks like a GH-1 I purchased not too long ago. On the bottom side, on the cylinder, there is a cast number. That, I believe, should give you and the seller an indication as to the model. I thought my purchase was a good deal, this one looks even better.

It is worth the $100. I would take it in a heartbeat. I have one just like it and use it all the time.

Not a bad price as long as all Hard parts are in good shape, I would check the pump Pistons for heavy signs pitting, check all the release linkages, casters etc. The model is from the previous HW regime so hard parts are $$$ in NOS and harder to find used.

Went and looked at the jack. I tested it with lifting one side on the front of my Dodge Diesel 4x4, jack handled it easily and held solid. I did notice the hydraulic ram unit has an oil/dirt film covering it but did not see any obvious leaks or fresh fluid leaks/drips from anywhere. Not sure if a rebuild kit would be a good idea. The ram does not appear to have pitting, etc. The cover plate is a little bent up on the ends where it got a little close to the lifting arm and the handle at the other end. I did notice the return spring is missing (not sure where to find a replacement). Casters seem to be ok, thou I notice there is some play where the needle bearings will stick out past the casters a little when rolling it around (maybe that is normal). Is it normal for the frame to flex and seem loose when rolling the jack around? Frame does not appear bent, did not see any crackes anywhere on the jack...but it is a bit dirty and needs a good cleaning to really get a thorough inspection.
Anyway seller was a younger guy. All he was able to tell me about the jack was he picked it up from guy he did some carpentry work for. Previous owner was a mechanic for Lockheed Martin and appearently got it from work when Lockheed replaced their old jacks. Offered the seller $75 and he accepted with little hesitation.

Where is the best place to find a seal kit and parts? Anything I need to be watchful of when looking for seal kits?

Be Leary of NOS kits, I would check with HPS, there contact info is in my Signature, Lazzar Hydraulics is another online site with good resources. May I ask why you think you need a seal kit? And always tear the Jack down and inspect coponents prior to buying a kit, sometimes bad stuff happens inside.

My dad always had a Hein Werner jack. It was left from his garage business in the 60s. It always worked great. I think he's still using it.

I am not a hydraulic guy. I usually have success when working on these sorts of things, but it is not my trade. I am sure there are others who would have success where I did not. I am just sharing what I have run across.

I found a used one that the PO thought was junk. I thought I could rebuild it. Things were not good inside. I rebuilt it more than once. I think I honed it out at some point. After awhile it would creep down & needed fluid periodically. I finally gave up & bought a new noname brand. Not the cool factor of that old one, but it has served me well. Far less frustration. I should have given up on the HW years earlier.

It's funny, I threw the HW away at work. A buddy pulled it from the trash. I told him it was junk, but he had to have it & was sure he could rebuild it. I never heard how that worked out. I'd still grab another if I had a chance, but I'd be more careful about the condition. One in good shape like my dad's would be nice. If it needed more than rubber parts it was beyond my skills or the work required to make it good.

It has been years, but I'm pretty sure I got the parts from Cal Tool. At the time I worked at a hardware store, & we ordered from them all the time. It looks like they have been swallowed up by MEDCO, & they appear to be nationwide & wholesale only. Following the links to Hein Werner, it looks like they are part of Shinn Fu of America now. Following their links to service, it looks like this page should take you to a local service center, who would probably be able to provide parts if you don't find them thru the sources listed in earlier posts. Or, if that doesn't work for some reason, you might try thru MEDCO to find a local retailer who can order the parts.

As mentioned above, does it need a rebuild? After seeing my dad's work so well for so long I might hesitate to tear into one that was working correctly.

I may not need seal kit, have not had time to clean up the jack and dive into it. Was just wanting to do a little home work and advance planning should I need parts when I get time to take on yet another project.

Took a few pics, just need to figure out how to post them

That jack looks leak free. I'd clean it up and use it. Looks like the front wheels bearings could use some grease and some shims to hold them in place.

Thanks for the advise. Was not sure if there was a leak or not based on the appearnce of the hydraulic unit. There has not been a drop of fluid on my garage floor so maybe it's a case of previous owner making a mess when changing the fluid??
Anyway with all the other projects I have going I can't spend much more time on it now, but I'm anxious to get it all cleaned up and see what I have. This is giving me motivation to finish all my open projects.
