Well, contrary to the mass numbers of folks recommending a different brand hydraulic jack, I went and bought a Hein Werner 93652 3 ton jack. I’ve only had this for a month so this is an initial review only.
It’s one of the newer made 93652’s so it’s one of the assembled in USA with USA and global components. What the global components are and where they came from are unknown to me; however, there might be a few hints. The parts list has components with 2 different types of patterns, one is a 6 digit number and the other has 2 hyphens within the part number. HCRCnow has a few HW parts for sale, and ones with a hyphen are listed as “imported” while others with a 6 digit number are “made in the USA.” Using that, I’m guessing that the reservoir vent, pump piston and the main hydraulic unit (not including the seals) are the imported parts.
Now I’ve read a lot of the Amazon reviews and one recent GJ 93642 (2 ton) review that kept complaining about shipping damage, so I purchased and picked up this jack from a local hydraulic repair store to avoid any Potential shipping damage.
Frankly, the Jack is fine. Just as I wanted. The frame is straight, the Bolts are flush and tight, the wheels roll smooth and easy - almost too easy as it wants to roll down the very mild incline of driveway By itself if left unattended.
The features I like most: The release is very controllable and smooth. The pump piston not engaging until the handle is near 45 degrees to parallel to the ground is extremely helpful when the Jack is far under a car to a deep lift point. The frame is one of the beefiest I’ve seen for a 3 ton. The handle being one piece feels very solid that pulling down on the handle takes less effort.
My only “gripe” is the lack of a speed piston for rapid lift to load. But then, I knew that before I bought the jack. However, I find that I’m often spending more time assuring that my saddle is on the lift point securely than the 2 vs. 8 pumps it takes to reach the load. After reaching the load, the pumping is the same. Without a load, it takes 31 pumps to reach full height.
Why did I buy this jack? First thing is that I recently got a 2018 Ford Transit that is being turned into a conversion travel / quasi camper van. It’s curb weight is probably around 6-7k Lbs, with final build weight Going to be unknown. Second, on this van, the official front jack point is on the edge of the transmission mount, and with side steps on the vehicle, a Jack needs to be around 32” in length to be able to swing the handle to move the pump piston effectively. Third, and most importantly, the Jack has seals that I personally consider “nice to have”. I.e a u-cup on the main ram, and multiple vees in the pump piston. Extra bonus is that I’ve since found that the pump piston vees can be tightened in case a leak develops in the pump. Fourth, it’s from One of the companies who has provided Rebuild seal kits readily available.
In any case, I wanted to put it out there that I have a current model HW that is of the assembled in USA variety that has excellent initial out of the Box quality.
Below are a few pics of the jack next to a Walker 781 (built almost 80 years ago with a speed lift piston, and pump pistons with vees and packing that can be adjusted with an external gland nut, 2 ton, 34” length) and a HF 34271 26” length 3 ton, bought sometime around Year 2010.
