You need to unscrew the guide, it surrounds the pump piston. It takes a special tool to fit the notches, but if it’s not too tight you can unthread it with some pliers.

There is a plug below the pump. Can the plug be removed and the piston removed through the bottom? I am also getting ready to do this job on a Hein Werner WS.

If the jack Utilizes a hex plug, it can be removed from the bottom. If it’s the Round plug, your better off coming from the top. The other issues from exiting from the bottom is that on occasion the upper part of the pump piston will swell from roller contact and won’t clear the guide without some grinding. I always... service from the top.

Does anyone know where I can source a wrench? Hydjack is no longer available. My jack bottom hex is rounded from the previous owner. Is there a recommended way to get the hex plug removed? Should I have someone weld a nut to the plug?

Some of them where round from the factory, can't tell if yours was or not, it was installed and then the hex portion was cut off to prevent unauthorized service centers from servicing the Jack. As I mentioned earlier, a semi snug vice grip will quickly remove the guide and then you can service it from the top, I have the OEM tool and I rarely use it, they aren't torqued down considerably.

I would attack either with a pipe wrench first and channellocks second.

Welding a nut is a decent idea but could cause a fire due to potential for puking out fluid.

Do I need a specific vise grip tool? I'm using craftsman needle vise grips, but unable to rotate within the channel of the pump body.

Took one out on mine 2 days ago the bottom hex is a plug, use a large flat head in one of the notches put in and tap it till it loosens than spin it out.
