Hein Werner Jack Leaking

My Hein Werner jack just started leaking from the cylinder. I was wondering about the possibility of just fixing this one seal that has failed. The jack has worked well for many years, and I am hoping not to have to get into the valve. This is the reason for just replacing the piston leaking seal. Is there a place that I can find a breakdown of the hydraulic cylinder and the seals / packing?

Still hoping for an answer if just the ram can be resealed successfully.. thanks Junk

Why the fear of getting into the "valve"? IME trying to replace individual seals only will cause you frustration, but sure... It can be done successfully.

Probably, but you'd have to find someone willing to just sell you either the packing or the ram cup. Most of the time, you're forced into buying the whole kit. Most people would advise you to just tear down the whole thing, replace all the soft parts, and call it good for the next decade. Search on GJ member "Hiball" - each of his posts ends with a supplier that he recommends for hydraulic parts.

Where's it leaking from - where the rod exits the packing nut?

The reason is that the last time that I tried to rebuild a Hein Werner jack, once I got into the valve, I couldn't get the cup in properly. A friend said to leave it in his shop, and he would do it when he got around to it. Someone in the shop thought that the jack was being scrapped, and put it into the iron pile. That was the end of that cylinder. I still have all of the kit parts that I bought from Hiball, when he was still selling seal kits.

When you say Valve? Are you meaning the main cylinder/leather piston seal? Or are you talking about the little BN piston seal that Aids in sealing the valve plug?

My thoughts on this. You most likely have junk/**** in the cylinder barrel that has helped the seal to fail. Unless you disassemble and clean all the old fluid and detritus out of the system you will soon have another failure.

I have no idea how close a friend he is but if I accept something from a friend to have a look at it and it gets thrown away I would feel obligated to make good for it.
