I have looked over my Hw jack and everything appears to be in good shape. I found a leak at the filler plug due to the gasket was half there. It will try to move when I pump it but wont go up. I can lift the arm up a few inches and it will lift all the way up, but if I stand on it it will go down all the way.I took out the piston and the packing nut was not even finger tight. I then gave the nut a quarter turn on the cup. I added oil after I put it together but it does the same thing. I am wonder where I should look next. I wonder if the safety valve or the release valve is where I should look next.
Also is there a way to tell the approximate age on this jack

My advice... Put the bandaids away and tear it down and start verifying internal components including the main ram seal, "internal" oil condition looking for contaminents that can cause valve issues, also valve components/make up. In all honesty a jack from that era could suffer from numerous problems, it's best to put eyes on all components.

Thanks for the reply Hiball
I want to rebuild it but wanted to try and see if it would work with trying a few things to see if it is even worth even tearing apart. OR should I just not waste my time on it and go buy a new jack I paid 30.00 for this jack
I will try to get it apart on the weekend I know I will have to go see if I can borrow a tool for taking the ram nut off
I think it is a pin spanner I need

The pump cup appears to be worn but no crack, a piece of dirt on the spring

I pulled the ram out and found the cup to have seen better days. The cylinder looks smooth it actually was fairly clean in there but it had pieces of the seal in it

Do I need to take the end nut off the ram ? it is # 4 in the schematic

Do I need to take the packing box nut off ? # 34

I have never taken a jack apart so im not sure if I need to take more apart

I went looking for a wrench to take off the ram nut nothing local so may take a trip and see what they have. I wonder would a hydraulic shop have the tool and would they loosen this nut off for me

I have some more questions I hope I can get some help with

Do I need to take the packing box nut off ? # 34 and the end cover #27 and does it unscrew ?
do I need to polish the ram and the piston they have very minor imperfections on them and how smooth should I get them.
Do I need to take out the safety valve it requires a special tool

I have answered some of my own questions I was able to get the packing box nut off what a dirty mess and pieces of the old seal. That end nut on the ram is tight I made a tool and tried to turn the nut I broke my bench trying it was an old cabinet that was beefed up many years ago. I will use the neighbors vise on the weekend and see if I can get it loose.

I was able to get the ram nut off with a bit of heat and the tool I made worked great, I took straight steel and shaped it round to fit the nut it took time but turned out good then all I had to do was drill 2- 3/8 holes in it and cut 2 bolts and it lined up in the pins on the ram nut.
The outside tube on the pump was easier to take apart except the one end was epoxied on end cover, I was afraid I would break the end cover if I hit it too hard so I found out if you heat it to around 200 F for 30 mins it will slightly soften the epoxy once I did that it came off with a hit of a soft mallet.

I put the steel ring around the nut then put the 2 bolts in and then heated the nut then put my pipe wrench on and the 3 foot bar, the ring held on the nut and prevented the pipe wrench from marking the nut this nut was tight

That looks like a fun project. Can't wait to see the finished product.
