I have a very old HW oboy jack that I traded a switch blade knife for in 1965 and have been using very often. The other day I saw a puddle of oil under it and now it won't jack up at all. I had noticed the last few times I had it under my, in progress, 1957 Chevy Belair two door hardtop that it was slowly bleeding off but I always use jack stands also. I know from reading Elroy's posts that a rebuild is needed but I think I will try a little Bars jack oil with stop leak first and see if I can save it for a while. I know this may sound stupid but can any one confirm where I put in the fluid? I see a 1/2 hex bolt or plug on the front of the pump housing between the front casters and below the release gear. Is that the location I seek? Thanks in advance. I just registered a few minutes ago but have been a lurker for a couple of days and purely love this place.

You are wasting your time and Money putting Stop leak in that Jack, The Main Ram Piston seal is Leather, It will do absolutely NO Good. If you insist.. The fill hole is on the Rear, below the flip up cover and is a Hex bolt. It is supposed to be filled while the jack is on all fours.

Do the rebuild, you won't regret it. I rebuilt mine following the rebuild thread, thanks Hiball. Now that's it's finished I need to have the name plate duplicated. Anyone have a picture of the plate? I can't make out the details on the old one.

Hiball what is the procedure of filling this jack....I thought I could just set it up where fill hole was accessible and fill it. Should the pump handle be down all the way?

Those jacks are top shelf. Rebuild kits are available. I would suggest to rebuild it. It will be a fun project and give you bragging rights.

Sorry for the late reply. If you google your jack & model number, you should find a breakdown diagram.

There is a plug near the pump (back end of jack near handle). Be sure the lift is completely retracted before you remove that plug. Be very careful when removing the plug. There is a spring and a couple of balls inside that will launch out and forever be lost. Also, note how these parts came out.

My jack leaked at the plug. All I did was make a new seal out of gasket material and 10 more just in case. I didn't need to rebuild it after all. However, rebuilding looks pretty straight forward based on the diagram. Kits are available from suppliers that I've found on the internet. Shouldn't need any special tools outside of some o-ring picks. If you need special tools, they should be available at Tri-State Bearing.

I don't know much more than that. I sold it a while back.
