I dragged an old WS jack out of hibernation recently. It hasn't been used in ages. It was put up supposedly because of a leak. Before I started tearing it down for a reseal I thought I would check it out. It was out of oil, so I filled it up and gave it a try. Left it sitting for a couple hours and it left a small puddle. I tightened the packing nut some and left it sit for a while...no more leaking. I took it out and jacked up the front of my car, it held a load for hours with nary a drop leaking.

My understanding is the main ram provides the seal and the packing is just a small "backup" for any seepage. Can I expect this to hold up enough to put back into use? Tightening the packing some just seemed too easy. Or go ahead and get a rebuild kit from Hiball? Thanks for your input.

It will probably start leaking again once the weather turns. The cold weather will shrink the seals. If you're willing to tear it down, best to do it now when you don't have to wear gloves.
