I have just started doing research on building a detached garage/out building. It will be used for storing at least one car, lawn equipment, workbench/tool storage, and maybe some general storage for other things that we no longer have room for in the house.

Due to financial limitations, I'll probably try to do as much as I can myself. While I am fairly handy around the house I have never taken on anything that big. I do have 2 brothers who have more construction experience than I do, so I'm hoping they'll lend a hand where needed. I will have to farm out the concrete pad though.

I have only been a member here a few days, but the one thing I have learned from reading the site is to build as big as possible. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions going forward.

Thanks,
Bill from North Carolina

Hello and welcome to the forum Bill you are correct the old adage applies, bigger is better if you can, that said a small and well organized garage can function equally as well.

All the best with your build.

Bill,
I've seen a 20 x 20 detached garage built very well for $5,000, but he didn't need permits in the mountains of Arizona for a garage that size. will you need permits?

I've seen some nice pole barn type garages or shops built for $20,000 with permits and even tearing down an old garage for a 30 x 40 or close to that size.

sounds like your family should be able to help you especially if you ask the right questions so might i suggest you learn a lot by maybe reading the threads you like in the garage gallery. also ask questions on those threads and here if you think you might need help.

take care and best of luck
