Hi everyone my name is Ruben from southern California and am in need of some serious help in getting organized in the garage. My garage is a standard 2 car garage (18" x 18') and would like some basic shop design help. I enjoy wood working, working on the '57 Chevy, I am getting into welding (small projects) and like to try and repair small appliances and small motors before getting another. First off my garage is in serious need of being cleaned out and I hate to toss stuff due to my "I might need that someday" mentality and at times get a bit overwhelmed but I need to get started because I want my garage back!
HELP:confused:

Some tips from a fellow pack rat and hoarder.

First, plan your space. Decide on what the final layout will be. Plan for big tools to be on casters. Plan for cabinets up high on the wall. Use all available space up high and above the garage door. Plan yourself workstations that allow for a flow of work and materials. Once this is planned start with removal and reorganization:

Buy at least 3 big tarps.
Take everything out of the garage and put each item in one of 4 piles labeled:

Trash or recycle
Give away or donate
Storage
Put in it's place

The first two are self explanatory. The third is for items not needed in the garage shop and should be put in storage either in the basement or in another storage solution like an outside shed or storage box. The idea is to get everything OUT of the garage/shop that is not absolutely necessary for it's function.
Now you can throw away the trash items and take to recycle items to the recycle locations.
Immediately take the give away and donate items to their respective recipients.
Now take the storage items and put them in storage right away.
Next, following your plan from above, Finish or clean and refinish the ceiling, walls and floor of the garage/shop. Do any construction needed of walls, insulation, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Install the storage solutions such as cabinets, shelving and etc.
Note: Everything you are going to put in the shop should have a place to be.
Now, place each item in it's predetermined place.
The result will be a workspace that is purpose driven with just the tools needed.

Don't be overwhelmed. If you want to break the job into smaller pieces, then do the sorting and disposal and storage steps first and you will have one much smaller pile of things left. This will be the pile of things going in to the shop/garage. You can now design the garage/shop around these things and your list of future acquisitions.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

It might help to look at the video in my signature, or the link to the thread on mine. I also have a two-car garage, and I also do car work, wood work, and metal work in it.

Welcome to the Garage Journal, too. :)

Welcome Ruben!

You can't throw anything out.....

I had a bunch of jack handles for years. Threw them out and within a month was given a bunch of jacks with no handles.

Wow Jack saw the video and your garage is very well organized. I had to post that on my Facebook page to share with my other garage and car buddies. Love the lay out and really like the lift you installed. I see your from LA I'm in the San Gabriel Valley, going to use both of your threads for reference.
Thanks you and thanks to all who have responded to my thread, I really appreciate the input.

Welcome aboard!

One thing that helps when you have a small space is to use shallow cabinets and shelves. One of the first cabinets I built is made from 1" x 6". It doesn't stick out from the wall very far but still holds a lot of stuff. (doors are optional, shelves work just as good without them)

do you have room for a storage shed?
if so then get one to keep the stuff you dont get to much but want to keep or you need.

make some decisions on stuff that you can let go and let it go

you need to use cubic feet and not square feet
for example you need some good shelving. strong stuff that you can put over your equipment and store stuff on. I use pallet racks that have been cut down to fit the height of the garage.
you need to have stuff on wheels. that way ypu can put it away for storage and then roll it out for use
