Hi All,

I am new to the board and I just wanted to introduce myself to you from here in Central Ky. I have just begun construction of what is for me a dream workshop and garage that I have been wanting to do for about 25 years.

The building is going to be 30x40x12 with 3 10x8 doors and a man door and windows. I have attached a couple of photos of the construction so far all of the work in the photos was done in two days. I have an Amish gentleman and two of his sons that are local( we have a lot of Amish and Mennonite folks in our area) doing the construction and they have been great so far.

As you can see from the photos I have a pretty severe slope. I have had to add about 150 tons of rock so far and may be more before the build is complete. I plan on finishing out the building on the inside and have gotten many great ideas from all of you guys on the board.

I know that one of the questions will be what is it going to cost. I will have about 28,000 in the building when it is complete. A lot of the expense is in gravel and excavation work. But in this hilly country we live in it is all but unavoidable. I will update my thread has the construction continues for all that might be interested.

Barry

Looks like a great start!!!

Welcome to the forum!!!

Keep us posted on your build.

I see your barn will be high and dry. Having it on top of its own little hill is a great way to keep moisture out of your shop.

You going to wait till May for the concrete so you don't get a winter mix? I did when I did mine and the last frost was the night before my pour. Your further south than me so maybe april would be good too.

I assume the door height is 10'. If not I would reccomend making one at least 10'. You may want to make that door at least 10" wide as well or replace two of the 8' wide doors with a single 16' wide door. You never know what you may want to put in there. iE, boat, car trailer trailer with wide axles, tractor, monster truck, etc. I've seen a couple people put small doors on thier shop only to realise that they can't get stuff through the door. My shop has a 14'x14' door.

Chris,

The doors are 10 wide and 8 high. I think I said it backwards. One of the bays will be a wood shop and the other two will be a garage of sorts. I have a small Kubota tractor and a 4 wheel drive truck. I have not decided if I will let the wife park her car in the garage or not LOL!

As for the timeline on the concrete I am not sure what that will be yet. I don't have a preference myself but I am leaving that up to the contractor. He did one for my buddy in the cooler months and it has turned out great. The weather here has been very mild so far this winter with projections into the mid 50's and then in the high 30's next week.

One of the problems that I am going to face is being able to park anything large on the high side of the building because of the slope and the proximity of the building to the house. The building is closer to the house than I wanted but I only own 6.6 acres of land and it is narrow. The building is about 15 feet from the back property line and the property has a strange configuration. So the placement of the building is about in the only spot I could locate it.

I have gotten my building completed and I thought some may be interested in the progress and what it looks like. It turned out very nice and I am very pleased with the quality of workmanship that the builder used.

I am now in the process of getting it wired up. I have pulled the permit from the AHJ and I am moving forward with the electrical.
