Hello, I'm John from Canberra, Australia. I found this forum while searching for info about my two speed breast drill - I did find one the same except mine says petite<>grande on the gear change knob whereas the goodell platt I found in here says slow<>fast - anyway I think this forum will be most interesting to me if I can just learn to navigate it.

I never decided to start collecting tools, it just happens - like the hand drills for instance, my old eggbeater drill was getting a bit err old and cantankerous so I thought I better grab a couple more off ebay... well that was four months ago and I now have over thirty and half of them are two speed breast drills (which I didn't even know existed until four months ago!)

I continually try hard not to add new categories to my collecting, especially currently as I am renovating my garage so all the contents are crammed into my lounge room (including four motorbikes) until the plywood cladding is done.

I currently have a collection of the following:
-bakelite items, mainly switches, light sockets, double adapters, power points
-vulcanising tyre repair kits - the ones you clamp on and light with a match
-files - both metal files and wood rasps
-Honda CB500/550 parts and bikes 1972-1975
-new and used bolts, nuts, screws, springs, washers, etc. - a lot from when I worked in a wrecking yard in the eighties
-wheels - bicycle, mower, trolley, etc.
-bicycles - mostly seventies models (mostly ladies unfortunately)
-motorised bicycles - I have eight old mountain bikes that I have installed jackshafts and engines to
-old car jacks and wheel chocks
-hand pumps - car and bicycle
-hand drills
-Sidchrome tools - I have nearly a complete mechanics set of both seventies and eighties vintage plus some older pieces
-tyre levers
There are almost certainly other things I can't think of right now stuffed in my lounge room and I also have all the usual garage stuff that hasn't accidentally bred into more of them than you could ever need in several lifetimes.
My computer wont recognise my current phone, so uploading new pictures will be something I will have to do on my phone. I have thousands of pictures on my computer but unfortunately none are named or sorted so a right pita to find anything particular.
I am looking forward to reading about others collecting experiences and am certainly not here to sell things - I don't sell my stuff!!
John

Welcome. Don't worry, your hobbies will fill every space you have...and then some.
I, fortunately do not see myself as having that mindset (and yes Dear, 43 complete motorcycles IS NOT too many).
Sounds like you already fit into this group.

Welcome to the Forum from Southwestern California.
in my limited experience dealing with your countrymen I have found that they often feel that we drive on the Wrong Side of the Road, I have tried to convince them that we drive on the other side of the road. If I were to attempt to drive in OZ, I would try to conform to your local customs.

Hey, thanks four.cycle, very helpful indeed! I just read the entire sidchrome thread with much interest.
Looking through the indexes and I can't find hand drills! What do you call hand cranked drills in here???

eggbeaters.

find the "Millers Falls" and the "Goodell Pratt" threads - there will be plenty of them in there.

search function - top right - use broad search parameters at first: e.g, "Goodell" or "Millers" - search "titles only" - you'll have dozens of search result returns - at that point all you do is look for the most active thread by "number of replies" - depending on brand it can get overwhelming.

OR... alternatively: search the "sticky index" HERE (the "sticky index" may or may not have every single brand listed, in which case you need to use the "search function")

Welcome John, Australia has a good tool manufacturing history. I have always admired Turner hand Planes to me the real bueaties are the ones with the red cellulose Acetate handles. Although Turner's manufacturing run only lasted from 1935 till 1970, when Stanley purchased them; they built some very good tools. Good luck on your garage renovation.
