Hello, my name is Erik.
I'm over form the HAMB, Dogfight and occasionally the Gear Journal.
I came here looking for ideas for a hydraulic press and inexpensive improvements to the cheapie lathe I have.
The press:
I've seen plenty of presses so I have a good idea what I want, but I'm a firm believer there are plenty of good and better ideas out there that I haven't seen.
So far I've read A_Pmech's and dr_clyde's threads as well as HAP's imporovement thread.
I like the lights and scattershield.
My press will be 50 Ton as pops has been saving a bottle jack for a press since he sold his Kenworth.
I wouldn't be in a hurry (not a real big one now) but a friend of mine and I just had to go to a third friend's house and use his press.
I've been meaning to build one for years (maybe be a father son project?) but I'm tired of having to borrow.
I have a set of plans, but I intend to add a trolley for the bottle jack so I can move where I can press inside the frame laterally (I forget who's thread I saw that in ).
The lathe:
I have a 9X20 lathe I believe is a C-Hina special.
I got two lathes at an estate sale for $100, I was helping the family out after, so there is a bit of sweat equity in there too.
One is apart and in a box.
The other, that I have partially resurrected (it runs now and I have turned a few things in it, roughly) is green and all the writing is in what I believe to be German or possibly Swiss German.
I believe that is just a marketing ploy though as it looks very similar to the Lathemaster 9X20 without any of the newer guards or safeties.
I know the current "JET" brand tooling rides too high on it, that and the lack of guards leads me and the local tool dealers to believe this is a much older model (apparently the tool post height got shorter in the 80s somewhere
).
So far I have read about improvements to these at the following sites.
http://bedair.org/9x20.html
http://www.micro-machine-shop.com/
I like what I'm seeing there as the mods I'm interested in are mostly free (the four bolt "compound clamp" will likely be my first project as I already have a big enough hunk of material
).
I know it will never be a South Bend, but I figure it's not only a good project to learn on, but it's a good thing to have, when you don't have a lathe.
