Hi Everyone,

My name is Jim and if I am here, then u know why.

I am about to embark on my dream garage. I'd like to stay on a shoe string budget but I might as well just pitch a tent. I guess I will try and be as budget conscious as possible. Not to skimp on the foundation/slab or really any where for that matter.

I am a Datsun/Nissan Z car guy since I first got my drivers license( please don't hold that against me :))
I have a small one car garage and I am tired of keeping my other Z cars either in my parents garage or under a car cover.

So it is time. At least to start the planning. My wife finally gave me the ok to BUILD. Borrowing the money from her 401k. I know some of u might say not a smart move. What if she loses her job or gets fired, yes then we would be screwed. The pros for me are the very low interest rate and we don't have to pay back a bank.

I want to build a two car garage deep enough to hold four cars. And when money permits a lift. I am trying to mimic a friend of mines garage and his dimensions are about 36x42.

Before I do any thing I will go to my local building dept and find out what I can get away with.

Any opinions as to a stick frame or steel building. I will have to check and see if steel is allowed in my town on residential property.

thanks, Jim

Hey Jim. Welcome aboard.

My wife is from the Island, around the Bethpage/ Farmingdale border. I would do stick. LI is crazy with the inspections. Had a recent issue with my inlaws house.

Def. a good idea to get in with the bldg dept.

Good luck.

Bry@n,

thanks for the response. It does seem like stick is the way I will go. I went to check out a steel building to day and was a little disappointed, at least for what i am looking for.

thanks again
Jim
