Hello Everybody,
My name is Kevin and I am a lurker. I've been reading for quite a while. I've gone through workshop and workbench threads looking for ideas on putting a shop together once I get the space cleared out. I own or have available on long-term loan (friend downsized from a 3 story house to a boat) basic wood working devices, but do not have open work space to refine my capabilities (like building a cross cut sled).
I am 'economical' so I have been slowly gathering tools from thrift stores, garage/yard/rummage/estate sales, craigslist and at times Sears, Rockler, and Harbor Freight (and other places seen in the deal threads like Home Depot). I read through all of this year's Garage Sale thread and that may be my first non-introductory post as I've come up with some similar bargains.
Within the last month or two the AvE youtube channel may have influenced my views on cheap tools. There may be some tools in the future that I spend real money on while showing me that some cheap tools are stronger than the fasteners they would be wrenching on. That channel is addictively entertaining and educational on mechanical/material engineering that I missed out on when I changed majors into technology.
I do work in technology but my spare time I tend to prefer the outdoors whether it be hunting, shooting, fishing, gardening, or cooking. I enjoyed my shop experiences and have made or worked on simple projects. I would like to create a space to continue working on new things and I may budge a little on technology in the hobbies with all the new developments in the maker space. I may not consider that very craftsman-like unless I actually build the 3d printer or CNC/router/engraver/cutter, but I am undecided on how far down that path i would go.
I've learned a lot from GJ. Perhaps we will stumble on to something that I know that will benefit other members.
