great forum here. lots of info!

I'm in the midst of building a second garage to house a work area and my toys. As of yesterday I'm this far along:

I restore old VWs, have a Chrysler Crossfire and I'm buying a tractor this coming weekend, so I need some ROOM. :D The final straw that pushed me into doing something I'd been considering for a couple years was the last winter storm. I got hammered SO BAD that the Weather Channel was reporting live from 5 miles away. 52-54" of wet, heavy snow that caused my temporary garage to collapse on a VW that I had spent the past year on. Had the body perfect with a beautiful red w/clear paint job that I did. Enough was enough. Time for a new garage! 30x36 with a 30x6 porch facing the pool in the back. Metal roof and siding. Still deciding on what to do with the floor. Electrical will have a generator backfeed to the house for the many power outages I have.

Welcome to GJ memento. Your project sounds great. We've got to keep them v-dubs protected as we restore (mine's a '65 bus). I've heard of snow from the weather channel, but I'm not too sure I understand the concept :headscrat. Sorry to hear it did some damage.

Can't tell from the photo if those are main power feeds or plumbing vents. Just be sure there is plenty of electrical and lighting. The layout looks nice with the garage on one side and a separate workshop. You even have a bobcat project waiting for you to work on. :)

I'll ask before others do, what ceiling height are you aiming for? Any lifts in the plans? As for the garage floor, there are a thousand opinions here and some are actually pretty good. I've weighed the options and have selected my Racedeck colors and now I'm waiting for the Finance Minister to approve funding.

Good Luck with your project and keep the pictures coming of both, the shop and the bug.

thanks!

I did forget to mention - 10' ceilings and attic trusses. Lifts are not in the plans for now due to budget. The wife and I have lifted and carried bug bodies and engines with just the 2 of us. :) 2 garage doors with office space. In the back of my mind, I'm also setting it up so that I can modify it as a winery/meadery since I make a LOT of mead. :D I'd love to step up to 50 gallon batches, but e ferminator in our dining room would not go over well.

The PVC is for electrical and one "spare" for whatever I want down the line. We're going to be putting another breaker panel and doing the electrical as thorough as possible.

I'm starting to settle on sealing the floor and leaving it at that. I'll need something to put down to drive the tractor on in the winter. 3000lbs plus tire chains can't be a good combination!

Sounds like you have it planned out. I haven't seen any other shops here with a winery, but I'm sure someone has one somewhere. Good idea to plan for spare electric service. Never can have a receptacle too close. You have a good point on the tractor tires with chains, but there are many on GJ with tractors that can give you advice. 3000 lbs is only about 750 lbs per wheel and spread out, it could be putting down only 10 psi. Interlocking tiles, like RaceDeck would handle that with no problem. Before you make your final decision, make a post under 'Flooring' asking what would work best with your toys.

Warning: Don't Click It! Looks like another new poster with spam to offer... Doesn't say anything of interest, just wants some attention...

I thought about something like racedeck, but this will largely be a working garage with only a small area for show (Crossfire). Maybe a partial racedeck or similar. I've been reading a lot in the flooring section. Seems like all my questions are already answered there!

For the chains, even my ATV is marking up the floors of my current garage, so at a minimum I'll be putting down some plywood.

FYI - I am also the admin for a healthy eating and weight loss forum so I can recognize spam quite readily. thanks to the mod or admin who deleted that.
