Hi Garage Journal,

I am Byron. My wife & I and our two dogs have been in this '69 mid-mod house going on 2 years. We've planned for 2 kids, first one in 2028. We are now planning garage remodeling and we look forward to learning and getting inspiration from this community.

The initial concept is attached. The northwest quadrant is intended for various hobby-level tech & craft projects.

Points that I will post to sub-channels to learn and get ideas for:
  1. Maximizing the attic storage area, but being cost-effective/scalable knowing that we eventually will extend the west wall & roof out. I want an overhead area accessible by folding ladder that stores seasonal & long-term storage items and that--as a nice to have--is a platform to access the attic door.
  2. Insulation. For insulation, I am considering installing vent panels & insulation up in the rafters (cathedral ceiling), insulating vertical walls & garage door, and sealing any drafts, but I do not know how significant that will be, and the massive glass wall is unaddressed. How do I insulate that single-pane glass wall in a durable way without significantly blocking out light? I will take temperature readings for a baseline.
  3. Heating/cooling. We keep the house thermostat at 68F in winter and 74F in the summer, overhead-only central-air, and I think the garage will be comfortable to gear up & work in from 50-85F (beyond that, I'm too sweaty or I lose too much dexterity & time layering up). I feel that the garage's heating/cooling system should be separate to avoid complicating and taxing the house's system. I prefer electric AC/heater combo wall unit, no propane. Any other recommendations?
