Well, I've been trolling the board for quite some time, registered for a little less, but it's finally coming around to time to say HI!

Currently living in Huntsville, my wife and I are looking to by our first home (yup, I'm a youngin). I can say that this hasn't been a 'fun' experience, but I'm excited to finally have my own place. I'm looking forward to y'all helping me spend money as I make the new house a home.

That said, I know there are several on the board from this area, I was wondering if any of you know what the setbacks are for detached and additions? Most of the houses we've looked at have a garage, but they just aren't big enough (when are they ever), so I'm trying to get an idea for how much room I actually have to add another one or build on.

I've been browsing the City and County website but haven't found a good answer yet, hopefully someone here can educate me.

Welcome! I'm only about 20 minutes from you.

There are some nice places in Madison that wont drain your pocket book. Near browns ferry and wall triana.

I'm not sure on building codes over there, but a decent sized detached will run you 8-10k, if you have someone do it.

Welcome from Ohio. Codes will vary by county. Visit your local buildin permit department and the will let you know.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Well, not we didn't really limit ourselves to Huntsville city limits specifically, but when we b egan this house hunt I decided that unless I could get more land for my money with a similarly sized house, it wasn't worth the extra drive to me.

We did look at a few properties with ~1acre, but we never really saw anything we liked enough to get us to accept the longer commutes. I think I'll be ok with my .5acre lots, but I am looking at them very critically to make sure I have a little bit of room to expand.

Thanks Richard.

I think we found what we are looking for.

Will start a thread once the deal is done, going to be an interesting house to work with.
