Cool! Thank you for the warm welcome. Nice to meet my neighbors, even if it is through a keyboard.

I came back to the site looking for information about an LED conversion for my newly acquired Sun 404 distributor tester and decided I might as well join the fun this time around.

I received a very quick and helpful response, full of tips and things to look out for. Hopefully I can repair the tool and find a way to return the favor.

This site has so much to offer that I predict I will soon feel indebted... thus, I am easing into it.

Thanks DeconSteve, I am eager to get it working. The strobe is very dim. I found a crispy resistor inside it today. Wouldn't it be sweet if a $.03 part fixed it? I am not getting my hopes up... sure would be cool though. I have had a lot of fun cleaning it up, since I got it last week. Yesterday I cut a new piece of glass for the Tachometer. She's looking pretty good, but NEEDS to flash. More research required. Hoping not to need any expensive parts.

Most of the things I buy are half broken and half the fun is getting them working again.

I need to find an easy way to upload photos to this site, since I take a TON of them up in the shop. It looks like I will have to use a photo hosting service, such as photobucket. I have already filled up two of their free accounts though. I spend a TON of time on a BMW 2002 site and they recently 'upgraded' the site, so I no longer need to use PB; but simply select them from the computer and put them right up. I sure hope this is similarly simple.

as far as pictures go i used to use Photobucket so i would paste in the link and have the huge pictures and then PB's free service became so difficult to use and had issues that i just take pictures with my cell phone, email them to myself and save them to my laptop. then from the laptop i click on the paperclip just above where we write our posts and download up to 7 pictures per post sort of like an email. i sometimes just go on GJ from my cell phone and download pics from my phone to GJ, but since i'm old i need the bigger pics and fonts to see that i'm loading the right pictures.

also imager or whatever that picture hosting site's name is has issues with GJ so ask questions if you have any and we'll help if we can.

we all like pictures with conversation about tools or a fix/repair to help us so post them as you have time.

Thank you for the tips, drivesitfar. That little paperclip is the key. Direct from my computer works best for me, since I have already filled up two PhotoBucket free accounts.

Here is a shot of the 404 I mentioned above. This was taken before a lot of the cleaning had happened. Everything works, except the flash tube is dim. I am hoping a capacitor kit will fix it, but need to test the transformer and make sure I am getting 600V, before ordering the kit. Fingers crossed.

oh, I won this tester on eBay yesterday. apparently it adds the advance feature to an ordinary timing light. I have an Innova light, with that feature and love it; but this one matches the 404 and was too cool to pass up.

Tom: not too many eyes on this section so if you have questions about your tools or ones you want to buy you'd do best to look up threads that are talking about them for information. if you can't find any threads then just start one in the right section and start off with pictures and all the information and questions you have.

also if you find threads talking about what you are looking for and you don't find your answer post a question on that thread and include pictures and the guys looking at that thread might be able to help you.

i usually hang in old tools, but i have a weight loss thread, PNW thread and plenty of garage gallery threads i post on.

I am not really fishing for assistance with this thread.
Just saying hi. I really do appreciate the help with posting photos though.
Nice that it is so straightforward.
FWIW, I ordered a capacitor kit for the 404 and the little tester should arrive in the mail tomorrow. I may share the results of the repair elsewhere on the forum.
Old tools is probably my main area of interest as well, though I have yet to learn what all this site has to offer.

EDIT: the capacitor kit did the trick and it flashes nicely now. I have also followed the calibration instructions and believe it is pretty much dialed in. Now I need a bucket of Bosch distributors/parts. haha.
