Joined up after poking through some long threads about shop lighting.

Just got structural permit signed off on a 24'x36'x14' engineered post-frame building on our lot on the outskirts of town. Biggest footprint I could go with the rules from the city. 5-6" concrete slab w/ fiber, screened to a dull finish. Hardiepanel siding and a reclaimed steel roof from a 24x36 building we took apart a few years ago.

12x12 overhead door. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done and we (wife and parents) built everything ourselves except the concrete pour. Lots of reclaimed materials from the disassembled building or stuff I've been poking away for the dream building.

I have a 24' masted electric Toyota forklift which GREATLY assisted in constructing the building. Roof, work platform, trusses, very easy. Couple pieces of pallet racking for storage of equipment/etc. Have a 1955 city bus I'm keeping alive, among other toys so the building will be part workshop (house and vehicles), part storage. First time I've ever had a garage of any type so fairly excited.

Next stop is wiring/lighting it up, caulking and painting the exterior, and insulating as time/funds allow.

Not sure if I'm allowed to add a google-photos link to the build album but if that's okay I'll toss one on here for anyone interested in the photos.

Thanks for the add!

Brandon: you wouldn't be the first person copying and attaching a picture from the internet and i'm not sure exactly what the rules are on that. i try to post most of the pictures i actually take with my cell phone so if you are able to take a few and then i use the paperclip just above where we write our posts to attach pics sort of like we do on emails.

good luck with that and ask questions if you need help.

i'm a fan of members that join from the PNW so if you want to meet a few others here's a thread i started that has a few and more than a few from Oregon that post on it.

Welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy all the members as much as learning all the stuff you are going to learn.

cheers

Thanks for those notes.

I edited and added some photos. The rest live on google-photos. I'll throw up a link there to the public album. I need to take some current exterior shots (trim up, roof finished, working on sealing).

Cheers!

Brandon: take lots of pictures so when you are done you'll have them. in the meantime post up what you have time to do and hopefully you'll have this weathered in before the snow or really cold weather hits.

good luck and nice looking shop.

What dimension are the purlins and the posts? The posts and rafters appear to be 12'on ctr?
I built mine (30x40x10) about 13 yrs ago and have enjoyed it every day I'm home. I built my garage with truss rafters 4'on center and used 2x4 purlins. When I built it I did not vent the ridge as I was going to built a cupola for venting. Cupola didn't happen and I found on damp days I had a moisture issue so I went back up and removed the seals from the ridge cap. No problems now. I live in an area where rocks are a real issue and couldn't use an augar. Borrowed a friends back hoe after I had dug 4 holes by hand, averaging just over 9 hrs per hole. Had help putting up rafters and a friend helpd me with a good deal of the metal. Also hired a masonary contractor to pour the floor (I'm not a fan of concrete work). looked over your pictures, looking good. Good luck, it is a lot of work but really cool when its done.

Purlins 2x6x16
Girts 2x6x12
Posts 6x6 PT with 4ft min in virgin soil (back of shop is about 3ft up on a fill we did, compacted concrete recycle). That monster in the back center is a 26'...$$$

We don't have much of a snow load here (I think was engineered for 25 or 30lbs/sqft, would have to check the documents). 12' on center for the posts.

Couldn't afford to do a full-blown sticks structure and to be fair really just needed the roof/walls to do stuff inside. Put the money into the floor.

Father is a heavy equipment mechanic so we had the compactor, excavator, etc. over there to do the hard stuff. Drilling the 8ft holes in the back for the posts...definitely glad wasn't doing by hand.

Had enough spare concrete to fill the form that I had mocked up for my 50ft aluminium radio tower (amateur radio operator).

Guy that lived in the house before us was a concrete pumper/finisher so we have a HUGE exposed aggregate driveway, patio, etc. almost all the way around the house. Nice dry basement and it has enough rebar/mesh in it that i haven't cracked it yet with dump truck/cement truck/forklift.

I did the south roof by myself (plastic sheeting + metal) then had a helper on the north side, went 4 times faster and ended up straighter. Vented the ridge with the mesh under the cap in two long sections to let the wet stuff out. Have a couple gable end vents in the back that I'll build louvers for to close off if I'm pouring BTU's into the building.

Overhead door I bought new through a friend, got a great deal on it and my dad and I installed it on a weekend. Insulated commercial steel/steel. Man door I saved from the dumpsters near my work (steel commercial). Lots of reclaimed materials in the structure but no rot and never swung a hammer for a nail. All torx screws and Simpson structural bolts/screws (dad found a bucket of the big 3" hex drive laying along side the road...about $1200 worth). Siding is all Hardiepanel. Annoying to deal with but after getting the right screws (stainless concrete panel) and pre-countersinking with a concrete bit, went very fast. About 1200-1300 screws in the siding alone.

Very happy to have a dry place to work and excited to get it lit up so I can see what I'm doing.

Brandon: is the fork lift yours or your dad's or are you renting it. nice to have one around when doing some work and nice job on the cement.

great to see you are getting it done. sounds like maybe your dad might be helping too?

i mentioned to get a plan for putting things inside over on the PNW thread, but i'm guessing after reading a few posts that you already know what you are putting in there so best of luck.

looks like you might be almost weathered in and maybe just waiting for a garage door?

The fork lift is mine. 36V older 2FBCA25 Toyota (36V w/ power steering and 24' mast option).

Outside of caulking, paint, and weatherstripping around the overhead door, it's 'complete'. I was sprinting to get the structure finished before the permit timed out. :) I haven't taken any current photos so will have to snap a few. Gotta build a step tonight for the doorway so the city is happy.

My wife and parents have been helping (along with a few friends here and there). Father is motivated to get the last of my stuff out of his shop so has been helping :lol2:
