Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT Hello From NE PA

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker. I have been registered on the site for a few years but never posted. My name is Lou. I am 29 from Northeast PA and am starting my second garage reno. My wife and I are expecting our first kid in January so we made the tough decision to sell our starter home and move into a beautiful 1930 home with a not-so-beautiful 600 sq. foot detached garage. While our starter home was small, it did have an 800 sq ft shop with 500 sq ft bar area upstairs that I finished off and added a small workshop. This time around, I will be needing to optimize the limited space. I also have an area sectioned off in my basement to build out a workshop but need to focus on getting the garage done first. I just ran a 100 amp service to the new "shop" and will finish off the interior wiring this weekend before insulating. I'm mainly a DIY guy so will be doing heavy research on the best way to resurface spalled concrete. I am also thinking about using an electric heater mounted to the ceiling. The plan is to drywall and use corrugated roofing sheets as a ceiling. Not looking to go too fancy as it will mainly be used as a space to watch football and work on a few old cars. My dad owns an auto repair shop that my grandfather started in 1953. We have been in the same residential neighborhood location for 70 years. I am pretty active on a few car forums but primarily work on my 1987 Buick Grand National, 1970 Buick GS, and 1970 Buick Skylark pro-touring build. My goal is to move the cars back in by Halloween. Looking forward to doing a TON of reading!

Welcome to the madness, I spent 8+ years in the WB/Scranton area back in the late 80's and early 90's.......Even ran the WVM&FC for several years and hosted the "Great Race" finish one year.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I just checked back in on this post. Bill- I went to King’s College in WB so equally fond of both areas, but Scranton will always be home. They just had the Steamtown Marathon yesterday.

I have been making good progress on the garage. We are completely wired up with a few outlets live to allow me to complete work before sheetrocking. I also got extremely lucky and purchased almost 720 sq ft of Racedeck Diamond plate. While it wasn’t my first choice in flooring, it was the easiest path to dealing with my spalled slab. I paid a little over a $1/sq ft for 80% used tile and a couple box of brand new. My plan is to completely tile the garage floor and use the rest in the laundry area in the basement. The goal this week is to finish insulating the walls, lay down the floor, and then get moving on ceiling insulation and Sheetrock. The goal is have the cars moved in by Halloween.

You won’t catch me bragging about my Sheetrock skills, but it’s good enough for who it’s for. I’ve set a move in date of 11/4 to get the cars back in. There is a lot of work left from now until then.

Sheetrock work looks fine, I'd tape and mud now, before you put anything back in the space, as any sanding will be messy, nothing worse than sanding dust on your car....

That corrugated roofing will do a nice job reflecting light. I hate trying to work in a dark garage.. The older you get, the dimmer everything looks.

I feel the same way. Lighting is everything. I have 20 4-ft LED lights. 10 packs on Amazon for $80. Straight from a China.. When I first moved into my last shop, I bought 4 ft Honeywell brand. It was something like $52 for a pack of 2. They didn’t make it through the winter with temperature swings as low as 20 degrees in an unheated garage, and as high as 80 (inside garage). I had over 3 years on these cheapies including using 1 as a portable shop light under cars, hoods, etc. I will most likely hang them in an “E” pattern on 2 separate switches.

2 things important to me are good lighting and the least amount of functional clutter. Spent some time cleaning up before taking on the tape and spackle project. Curious to the group’s thoughts on a color? When I was going to epoxy the floor, I was planning on a light grey with darker grey walls. Now I’m thinking of doing a light grey. I know most prefer a lighter color on the walls. There will be quite a few signs hung, and a 69 GTO judge endura bumper.. attaching my newest sign- a pre 1955 Mobiloil. My grandfather and dad sold mobil gas from 1953-2000 at our residential repair shop that my dad still runs today. There used to be 2 large 3D pegasus signs hung on pole (still there today).. my grandfather sold them in 1990 for $400..

Made a lot of progress over the last 2 weeks. Wrapped up tape, Spackleing and sanding last weekend/Monday. PVA primed Wednesday. Painted Friday and got half the ceiling done Saturday with the help of a buddy. I started rigging up some lights to see how I want to pattern them and think I like it so far. I also got one of the cars back up. Pics make it look better than it is, but it’s good enough for who it’s for! The floor is also wet from mopping.

Thanks, it’s clean from a distance! It was totaled in 2002 by the 3rd owner and stuffed away into a warehouse. I bought it in August 2014 and frame swapped it with another real 87 GN. By April 2015, it was back on the road. It had 37,000 miles on it when I bought it, up to 47,000 now. 70% original paint, original interior, and rebuilt with OEM or NOS parts. All numbers match. Going to be getting a slightly bigger turbo and new exhaust in the near future. It looks good from 10 feet, the passenger quarter panel still shows damage from the accident.
