Hello from Nor CAL/So CAL

Good morning everyone, sorry for the late intro, I have been lurking for about a week and was blown away by all the useful information and had to join. What a really great site for learning how to get my second homes all squared away. I am currently divorced and have an amazing three year old son that lives with his mom in Los Angeles, CA. The reason I titled this thread Nor CAL/So CAL is because I spend every chance I get with my son and help out my ex mother in law with her house work. I will be posting pics of the So CAL space I need to organize later time but have the Nor CAL garage space photographs ready to launch.

My Nor CAL space is mainly used for me to try and distract my mind, an escape to make my life a little more pleasant. The only things the Nor CAL garage is used for is working on my two cars. I am always maintaining my daily driver a 2000 V6 VW Passat and am currently restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang(my dream car). Here are some photographs of the Nor CAL space, I would really like as much feedback and suggestions from everyone here on how to really get organized and efficiently use the space, for example: tool storage, gardening tool storage, and stuff that hardly gets used storage.

One of the things I forgot to mention is that Im trying to compile a list of things to do and my two top items are the workout bench and one of the BBQ's will be getting trashed to make some room.

Thanks Bob, yeah I do drive through the central valley (gotta love I-5) almost every other weekend.

I have never done a restoration before, so it's been slow going but thats what I was looking for, learning as I go. The little guy and I get to work on it every once in a while which was my main goal for the car, father son project. Im looking to restore the Mustang to look as original as possible with safety upgrades, front disc brakes, Opentracker suspension, maybe subframe connectors. I have a 69 351w on the engine stand that I was hoping to use for the 65 but have been adviced to stick with a 302 or back to the original 289.

Currently trying to figure out the best way to store my tools and parts so that I dont continue stuffing them in, under or on top of the Mustang as well as loosing sockets and wrenches. I am also trying to figure out storage so I can bring in a 80 gallon compressor to go along with the media blaster. If anyone has suggestions on a air compressor I am all ears. Thanks in advance everyone.

BTW, I was thinking about turning the wall by the Mustang into a Pegboard wall for tool storage instead of a tool box. What do you all think?

I'm a huge fan of enclosed cabinets. With that said, you might be able to score some great deals on Craigslist. I have had some good luck with two door metal cabinets and putting my stuff in them just makes the place a lot less cluttered.

Depending on which part of NorCal you're located, there is a Sears outlet in Hayward. That may be a good place to also score some good deals on clearanced tool storage. Orchard Supply Hardware is also running some ball bearing griplatch toolboxes on clearance.

I was helping out a former roommate with a '65 restoration... lots of sanding, unfortunately.

Thanks Mike, the 65 is definitely my first restoration but it wont be my last. I swear, my son is my best friend, and this restoration is really special to me just because he has actually had is hand in a lot of the work.

I am located in Union City right next door to Hayward, I will have to look up the Sears outlet. I never knew a Sears outlet ever excisted. Enclosed cabinets do sound like a really good idea, it would defenitely give the garage a really clean non cluttered look. Thanks for the tip.

I have done the 351w in a 65-6 before and its very tight. tight enough it makes it a pain to work on.
the 289-302 will give enough power for what you are doing and if you want more you can go to a 331 stroker kit.
I have built many ford small blocks that will do 325hp-350hp and still be very streetable and reliable.
disc brakes are a good choice, just dont do the granada disc swap. if you can find the frond discs from a junker 68-73 mustang or cougar you are better off. they are also the same parts on torinos and rancheros 68-70
I have the hollander exchange manual we can reference when you get to that point

I would put the compressor outside and build a small shed cover. if you have the space I think I would also make a small 'patio cover' and put the blast cabinet outside as well. they take up a lot of space and make a mess
