Think Sacramento, then keep driving.
I started a post with a new construction house and garage build that we finished in July 2016. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348643
Check that out if you want to see the progress, updating pictures as time allows.
Found this forum while doing some research for some projects. Lots of great resources here, good advice. Figured I would jump in since I plan on sticking around.
I am 30, married, 2 1/2 year old and one due August 1, 2017. We live on 4 acres on a dead end street next to family; feels rural but we are 4 minutes from Walmart and HD.
I grew up doing stuff outdoors but very much raised in a white collar family. It wasn't if I was going to college but what for. Long story short i did graduate with a BA degree but wasn't ever too thrilled with school.
18 months after graduating I got into a 3 year apprenticeship program and started that January of 2012.
I commuted 140 miles a day for 4 1/2 years, it took its toll on me and my family, props to anyone who is still commuting. August of this year I was finally able to transfer and work locally. The work isn't as enjoyable but for a 10 mile drive round trip, I'm not going to complain. I now work at a Dam and enjoy the large variety of work we do.
I'm here to ask questions, learn, and have a good time.
My dad growing up never taught me much about anything hands on related. I want to be able to do my own home repairs, projects, wood working, welding etc. it has been a fun process so far. I have learned a lot of skills at work and it has been great. As I have more time I have enjoyed building things for the house.
I want my son to grow up with the confidence of knowing how to do things with his hands, but if he chooses to pursue a different career he will still have the ability to be hands on. I think more and more today it's important to pass on the DIY fix it skills to the next generation, these skills are disappearing quick especially in (gulp) my fellow millennials.
I have lots of plans and projects for our property and the shop. I will be posting in my garage gallery and will try to figure out how to put a link in my signature.
Thanks for being a warm and welcoming group, look forward to sharing and getting to know people. If you have any questions, shoot away.
