Hello all,

As a 9 year member this is my first post! :shocking: I jointed in 2008 when I first bought my house, and was looking for ideas for the garage, specifically flooring. I got it done before we moved in and it has been holding up great! I wish I would have done more to correct the floor (poor slope and grade) at the time, but budget and time being what it was, a nice 2 car with painted walls, knockdown ceiling and a fresh epoxy floor was really nice... for a while.

After hundreds of projects, winters with cars (daily driven, not the garage queens) parked outside, a carousel of cars travelling to storage and kid's toys to the basement, we started thinking about moving forward with a barn. A couple of years ago, we were able to purchase the land in front of ours to bring us to 5 acres with the goal to build on the new site.

For fun I've CAD'd up alternatively engineered options involving shipping containers, backfilled CMU retaining walls, green roofs, cantilevered roofing systems with full glass walls, but ultimately, I want the space to continue to work on projects, walk away when I'm tired of it, keep good deals and interesting hardware, store my toys and friends toys, and have an enjoyable space to spend time. Being an engineer, I am always trying to keep a good $/SF for function - then style, but I love an interesting architectural concept.

I'm currently leaning towards a more traditional post frame building in an approximate 40'x72'-80' dimension, 14-16' height, adjusting for budget vs. finish vs. making myself barn poor. The building would be divided into half insulated and half non-insulated. The insulated would serve as the winter work area and additional winter parking. The other half would be storage and spring/fall/summer indoor/outdoor space (with an eventual pond to back up to the building, currently a dirt kart track).

Attached are pictures of the current garage in a less cluttered state early in it's life, and some kit renderings that I have done for the two halves.

I'm starting to discuss the installation and site work with a few kit providers and contractors who build custom buildings, but always looking for input on layout and do's/don'ts. Lots of browsing/lurking has/will be done. I'll follow up!
