Hello everyone. I'm an occasional visitor (drive-by drooling and waiting for 'the' day) and figured it was time to join. I moved from a small house with 2.5 car garage on 1/3 acre in IL to a larger house with only a small 2 car garage on 5 acres in Ohio. Part of the deal I struck with my wife was that if she got 'her' house, I had to get MY outbuilding. Well, it's about time to get started on making good. I had a local builder out today who does a lot of work for the owner of the company that I work for and we looked over a few sites that I had picked out and hashed over some of the basic details...I just have to contact the county health dept. to get the plot of my septic system to see if I can use the spot that I picked out that's close to the house (cheaper electric, less driveway to add, don't need to build a shed too).

Planning to go 30x40x16 with a 12x14 overhead door and service door on the front and an 8x8 overhead near the back of the side that faces the house (I'll use that section as the 'shed' for my lawn & garden tractors, etc and put a loft over top of that area). I'm going tall so that I have clearance for a lift with my tall Jeeps and can back my trailer in with a Jeep loaded, plus have room for a loft.

Thanks. I'm on hold with the health dept. now...they're looking up the records (thank goodness I remembered who originally owned the house when it was built)...and the plot has been located and is being faxed to me. I'll take some pre-shots of the site(s). Should have my quote on Monday. Hopefully this spot is okay. I think it will be given the number of trees around it...seems like a less likely place for a septic field than the backyard. The building should just nestle into place between a few trees and should only need to sacrifice one lilac tree at the front which I'll save some pieces of to plant elsewhere (the contractor mentioned some goop that you can soak them in that promotes root growth, then you just stick them in the ground and let 'em go).

Well, if I'm reading the septic contractor's chicken scratch correctly, the septic field is in the backyard and my building site is clear. I just have to watch for the line from the tank to the field when I bury the electric coming out of the house.

Another nice thing is that one of the owners of the company that I work for also owns an excavation company and a spray foam insulation company...discount. You should see the house/bed & breakfast that he's finishing up (he and his wife live on the 3rd floor)...it should be on TV.

Need to figure out what I'm going to do for heat since my house is all electric...just have a 100# LP tank to run my standby generator.

Jeepskate,
Sounds like you have a great head start on alot of guys ie:access to heavy equipment, spray foam insulation.I can't wait to see the finished garage!
Once you take your pics I suggest you move to the garage gallery section so everyone can keep up with the build.
