Hello,
I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Scott and I'm planning a garage build. I recently made my first visits to the city project planning office and the next step is arrange a pre-application site visit.
My garage I'm planning is to primarily to resto-mod my '56 Chevy's. Based on the details of my situation, I'm limited to 1000sqft and a ridge height no more than 15' above grade. At this time, I'm basing my plans around a 28'x32' (896sqft) plan I found on BehmDesign.com. I'll be using a provision for a 8'x16' door at the entrance along with a 42" man door.
The roof will be a 4/12 pitch, and should yield a 14'11" finished height. Instead of standard trusses, I'm planning on the first 12' to be storage trusses and the last 20' to be scissor trusses which may allow me to use a lift in the future. I realize the storage in the trusses (accessed by a collapsible ladder) may be a bit skimpy, but I'd rather have a little than none at all. I also am considering two skylights at this time to help with natural light besides the two 2'x4' windows I plan to have.
In addition to my garage, I'm building an attached 8'x12' (96sqft) garden shed onto the garage to house my yard equipment, but more importantly the compressor I will have to run my shop tools. I'm doing this to keep the noise level in the shop manageable. I will need to noise proof the garden shed and compressor fairly well, as I don't want to disturb my neighbors in the evenings and on weekends with my car building activities. The garden shed will have another 42" man door serving it, and will also have a 36" door leading into the garage for safety and convenience reasons.
I plan to insulate and sheetrock the garage, and seal the floor with an epoxy product. I also plan to wire it with both 110 and 220 (compressor, welder, etc) and heat it with natural gas. I will rough in a phone line, coaxial cable, and some simple plumbing when my trench from the house to the garage is open as well. I also will run speaker wire in the garage for a simple sound system.
Some of the items I plan on having in the garage include: a blast cabinet; hydraulic press; engine hoist; engine stand; engine dolly; parts washer; work bench topped cabinets; a rotisserie (for car bodies); compressed air hose attachment points; refridgerator and a few other items that probably aren't coming to mind.
I'm particularly interested in outfitting and arranging my shop in an efficient manner with quality products. A comfortable, well lit, safe shop is the goal. I want to try and resist saying in the future "I wish I would have...". I figure those who have gone before me can offer the most insight to help prevent that. So any and all input, comments, constructive criticism are welcome.
