I have been reading and gathering information from this forum for weeks. I very much appreciate the time everyone puts into helping others realize their dreams.
In the interest of sharing I'm going to share my adventure as I start my Barn Building Project. I have been learning along the way and welcome any advice and/or constructive criticism.
My wife and I purchased just under 19 acres of land in Southern Indiana in August and will eventually build a house on it. But first we are going to build a barn to act as our base of operations while we work on clearing the land and setting up for our new home.
I'm a weekend wood worker and will also need a place to setup my wood working shop and store my tools as well as my Kubota.
I was originally looking to build a 30'W X 64'D X 20'H barn with a enclosed 12' lean-to on each side. This would give me a total of about 3,456 square feet. After having this barn priced by a couple sources I realized that it was a bit over my budget (actually way over my budget). I decided to remove the lean-tos and go with a 36'W X 64'D X 18'H which will give me 2,304 square feet. I can then add the lean-tos at a later date and when we can justify the additional space. I also dropped the height by two feet. I had a couple local lumber yards bid on this as well as http://www.diypolebarns.com and just decided today to go ahead and purchase from DIYPoleBarns. The barn is going to be traditional red with white trim and accents and it will have a grey roof. I worked with a couple people from DIYPoleBarns and did the final deal with Mike who was very helpful and patient with me through the process. It is my understanding that I will have the barn kit in 5 - 6 weeks or so. I will know more in the next few days.
I was also considering building the building myself to save some additional money. I have plenty of help and the right skill level to do it but I do not have the time so after much encouragement from my wife, I decided to have a couple builders bid on it.
I will know in the next few days who I will be contracting to build the barn. I have been told that it will take about a week or a little more to put it up.
I'm looking forward to the next couple months and getting my barn put up and sharing my experience with you all.
