GK: best of luck with the shop build. how far are you along? do you have plans yet or are you still in the process of looking for and buying a piece of land?
tons of great threads and a lot of members with a lot of talent here in case you find you might need a bit of help.
welcome to the forum and you'll find me mostly in vintage tools or garage gallery cause i like the members and that kind of stuff in those areas.
pick your favorite threads and hopefully you'll find members building a similar shop to you even in your same area of the world too.
if you ask how big should i build my shop common answer will be "HOW MUCH CAN YOU AFFORD?" and then they'll say build it a bit bigger than that unless you can't get it permitted to build bigger.

GK: stick built on foundation with stub walls, metal or pole building type of construction.
sounds like a great project. here's a couple tips if you want to start a build thread and get plenty of member's eyes and comments cause being a new member with a new thread there are a lot of them (thousands in fact). post plenty of pictures with good information and ask questions when you need to. it might seem like you are talking to yourself for a while otherwise.
also put a link to the thread in your sig line so when you post on other threads other members can see what you are building with a click on their mouse.
best of luck and feel free to post up a few pictures on this thread of some of your favorite stuff or your building site if you want to practice posting pictures.

Thanks for the input. I'm attempting to load pics of my current shop. It's simple but has served me well. 23' wide x 26' deep inside the walls
So stick built over pole barn? I'm using a guy that builds them like Morton does. Just curious the advantages of one over the other?

GARY: of course it depends on several things. climate, budget, building codes and probably a lot more, but those are the main ones.
being up here in the PNW i know they build pole buildings and even though i'm 61 and probably not building a shop for maybe 5 years until we are both fully retired so we can move out of the city i'd probably still build a stick built one. i'd prefer Mueller or similar type steel buildings, but i doubt i'll be able to afford that and still stay within 20 minutes of a city around here.
if you know which type of building you want to build just ask or PM me and i'll try to send you a few links to a few of my favorite threads.
i'm not sure what all the prep costs are in your area like design, septic/sewer, dirt prep and construction costs, but one of our members just built a 30x40 (i think) pole building where he did the insulation and electrical and with cement floor i think his costs were less than $30,000 including demoing his old garage.
what's your budget once you figure out the size will probably determine the type of construction. i'd probably spend more than the norm and i wouldn't take the cheapest bid unless i really liked and knew the builder cause you have to live with them for a few months and cost overuns for not being on time or hidden costs could get up to the other bids in the long run.
it's not easy building or everybody would do it so take notes, be prepared and ask a lot of questions if you have any.
