We are just starting a renovation with our detached garage. I'm looking for help in cutting the heat inside our garage. It literally melted a pair of garden gloves this Summer with our over a month long triple digits this year. We have started insulating the walls with R-19 and over that we are using some old barn tin that we are getting from a barn we are tearing down at my Mother In Law's homestead. I found an interesting thread on just this problem but would like to know just how many solutions are out there. I would like to leave the trusses open if anyway possible, but whatever is most cost effective would be the way we will go.
Great site with lots of information.

Greetings..er, Howdy! Your options may be limited if you want the trusses open. Just look at the structure and know that you'll want at least R-13 up there which -if batt- is 3 1/2" thick. You will have to have an air gap above that and ventilation to move that air. So that will drive how you place and secure the insulation. The only way around that would be spray foam directly on the rafters and underside of the decking. I see that more around here now in new construction, in new houses over $130~140K.

Welcome fellow Texan.
I have a detached garage also. Where the autos park it has open rafters and gets pretty hot. The work shop area has a ceiling with insulation and about 4 feet of vented air above that. Gets warm, but nothing a fan can't fix. I have a little window A/C I'll put in some day. The insulation you are adding will help a lot.

Welcome neighbor to the south and be sure to start a thread in garage gallery with lots of pictures. (WE LOVE PICTURES) Ask a couple of questions in the proper discussion sections and you'll probably get baraged with more opinions than you need but we are here to help as best we can and there are a bunch of bright people on here. When I went to buy more insulation, the guy at McCoy's told me I only needed r-13 for the walls, so I guess there will be a mixture of the two r values. No way was I taking down all that tin again. I'm still undecided what to do about the insulation, maybe attach it to the roof itself?
