Given that ground has been broken for our retirement house and shop in Aubrey, TX it is time to get active on the Journal. Married for 34 years, we have two grown sons, a dog and four cars. Sons are out on their own, both working in computer related jobs. I've been a car nut all my life. I hate to let anyone lay a wrench on my cars - the only thing I won't tackle is body work. I've done lots of autocrossing over the years, retiring from serious competition in the late '90s. Current toys are a 1986 MR2 that we bought new, and a Birkin (Lotus Seven replica) that I built from a kit in 2001.

I retired at the end of 2016 after 43 years with the phone company, and we then spent months looking at homes. Our requirements are for a big kitchen and pantry and room for a garden for my wife, and a shop (or room to build one) for me. We also wanted to avoid living in an area surrounded by gas wells. This last one limited the area where we could look, and nothing suitable came up. We also kept an eye out for land, but small parcels (1 or 2 acres) with no HOA and light deed restrictions are very had to come by. Finally, 2 1/2 acres came available at a good price right in the middle of our desired area, so we snapped it up!

The pads have been scraped and leveled for a 2150 sf home with a two car garage, and a 2000sf metal shop building. About 150sf of the shop will be closed off with its own rear entrance to serve as my wife's gardening storage. Today we have only a 3 car garage. With three cars, lathe, mill, toolboxes, workbench, table saw, etc etc is it ten pounds of candy in a five pound bag. So, I plan to refer to my new shop as my ten pound bag - the Ten Pound Garage. I couldn't find any reference to that name - let me know if I'm copying someone else's idea!

So, thanks to all the fine folks here for the ideas and inspiration! I hope I can contribute as time goes on....

Welcome from CENTEX
Your home requirements are exactly why we stayed in the part of TX we did after I retired from the Army with 29 years

I wrench on bikes for a living and do metal fab work as well..... Your about 216 miles away, so a little far for morning coffee.... but perhaps a meet up once the shop is up and running and I'll ride up and help christening it :bounce:

Thanks all! We'll have to arrange a meeting of central Texas garage nuts one of these days!

Hope you are having a great Thanksgiving!
