Hello! Like most people here I've been lurking on the many beautiful garage builds and expert knowledge.

I just moved to Windsor and have the chance to build a wonderful garage, possibly with an apartment on top (I have yet to confirm this...getting feedback from the city has been a little slow). I'm in the planning stages, we'll see what happens. I would be curious if there's anyone in the Windsor/Ontario region who's done this before. I know garages have been built, not sure about garages with apartments, living spaces for renting, etc...

Hope to be learning lots on this forum and contributing with my extensive knowledge base (or lack thereof :) )

Welcome!

I've always had a thing for Windsor, but never lived there. Used to visit there in 1965/66 and stayed in a Tourist home on Ouellette Ave....something like $8 for the night. Do those things still exist?

I'm not sure, I'll have to take a look! I've been here all of 3 weeks, hence I'm still getting to know everything (particularly how incredibly difficult it is to import a US vehicle into Canada...I could rant.)

How do you get to Windsor from Detroit ? Drive SOUTH ! (The tunnel actually runs southeasterly.)

I haven't been there in years.

Welcome
Good luck with getting building permit for garage with loft. The height could be a sour point at city hall but you can apply, could take a year to get permit. My neighbour got permit 20’ tall garage to match his house. Took a year to get permit, had to make special applications. I built standard garage, had permit in minutes. Every city is different.

Thanks, I feel like I'm going to need it. It's a little slow getting feedback for what I can and can't do. I'm on the fence, I've seen places here with mother-in-law suites, I know people have done it. It would be nice to have an idea of what the wait time is like, if we're talking a year I might be reconsidering the loft and just going with a standard single level garage.

Go to building department at city hall. There will be someone who can give you a list of the hurdles, I forget what the application is called but I know of a few folks along with my neighbour who have built with these permits. One guys house he got application, house now covers 80% of his lot. Normal permit only allows 30% for buildings around here I thinks
