Hello everyone,
I'm new to the site and have been browsing all the awesome garages. I just finished buying my first home and the first thing I'm doing is building a garage.

I want to install In floor heat and lucky for me I'm in that field of work so I'll be doing that work myself. This is where I need help. I will be doing all the work myself along with friends and family who work for beer. I would like ones input on the garage slab. I was doing some reading on related slabs and I'm interested in pouring a slab with the outside edge to be thicker so I can build the garage package ontop of the slab.

I was looking to buy the garage package at Menards because it is a lot cheaper to bring it to Winnipeg.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Justin

Welcome to GJ !

My slab is thickened to 10" along the edges, and the floor is 5". Just been through it's first winter, no problems. I have about 18" of compacted base.

Justin,

Go Winnipeg! Two new poster from Winnipeg.

Sorry I can't give any advice on building, but it is awesome that you will be able to do your own in floor heating. I am having in floor heating done in my place but have to trust my project manager for his input.

How large a garage are you planning on building? How old is the neighborhood you are building in? i.e. settling.

The house was built in the 20's but has been redone since it backs onto the seine river had a garage at one point but was erroded due to the river washing it away. Since then a retaining wall has been installed and now is ready for the build. Thinking of going 30' wide x 26' deep with a double door and 9' ceilings.

Welcome to the board Justin. We also have a Canadian subforum on here. (Traffic seems to be lacking lately) but go up to black tool bar, click on community, then social groups and look for the flag.

Welcome Justin!

I too just found this site and as a recent returnee, built a garage late in 2011, with all the fun finishing it this spring.

One suggestion: pics and more pics. Someone else said it never happened without the pics to prove.
