Hey what is going on all? Hey my name is Brett I am a yacht Builder from Vancouver Washington long-time Gearhead and Aficionado and user of all tools. I have recently become interested in older tools, specifically vises, After a Wilton Bullet restoration I did at work i realized how pathetic my cheap imported vise was. Thus began the research and hunt for the ultimate vise for me which inevitably led me here. I have lurked around for a couple weeks and have been fascinated with the forums here and look forward to becoming part of the community here at GJ.

Thanks for the welcome, I will definitely be posting up some pics of a couple of my recent vise finds plus a sweet old machinist chest I picked up.

BRETT: i used to find vises almost daily in Portland, but since i joined GJ and made about 3000 posts on the main vise thread the word is out that old vises are not SCRAP and are a very usable tool.

that said we are not quite neighbors cause i live near Seatac, but i do still have a few vises if you might have a trade in mind or just want to buy one for the other end of your bench.

so do you own your own boat building company or work for one? sounds like you have some SKILLS and a good head on your shoulders too so happy to have another PNW guy join GJ.

as you can see from the amount of posts i have i love this place, but you need a little tough skin at times to ward off the NAYSAYERS or members that are just having a bad day.

for the most part this place i a fun place to teach and learn so you will stick around. ask questions if you have any and if a specific type question on a tool or machine try to ask the questions on a thread that is already talking about them to maybe get a better or quicker response than just starting another thread.

cheers and i like the picture you chose for your AVATAR too.

Thanks drivesitfar, I actually work for Christensen shipyards as the mechanical shop foreman, and yes after 15 years of boat building I have acquired quite a range of different skills. And have drilled and tapped more holes than I ever could have imagined. I appreciate the offer on the vise's, but I have dedicated this summer to finding myself the perfect larger vise, and I'm sure you know the thrill of the hunt and all the unexpected treasures that come with that, so I am looking forward to that. Hopefully we will see you around here more. Good day sir.

BRETT: i think the HUNT/FIND and purchase of old tools is maybe close to as much fun as i've had in my life. best of luck in your search for that big vise and just know that just because i have more than a few i'll be searching for another one myself.

hope you like GJ half as much as i do and there is plenty to learn here. if you read some threads and like them maybe just post up a WELL DONE to let the posters know they are posting something of value. sometimes we really don't know. also ask questions and get to know some of the members as you have time cause because of this site i now know guys and gals all over the world and the list keeps growing.

i bet you could start a BOAT BUILDING thread maybe in fabrication section and maybe show off a few of your company's projects and some of the skills one would use to build a boat. not required, but sounds like a good place to start to maybe meet other guys in your profession or some great people that might just want to build a boat for themselves. how does BOAT BUILDING 101 basics to professional techniques sound for a thread title. also just an FYI sometimes some of my best threads took a while to get members to post on them and it felt like i was talking to myself for a few months and the Vise Repair 101 thread was one like that and it's now got i think 500,000 views and you might have seen it.

cheers
