Guys this is a great forum you have here. I have been a member for a while now but this is my first post. My wife and I are in the process of buying a 1800 square ft house and a acre of land in a sub division. The house is on a square lot and it doesn't have a garage, this is where you guys come in. I am going to build a wood framed garage with vinyl siding to match the house. I would like to build a 32' x 40' garage, but it would probably look a little awkward in this particular environment. I have pretty much settled on a 24' x 36' garage. I will be keeing my wife's grand prix, my chevy 2500hd extended cab, and my HD electraglide and ZX10R in this garage. I plan to have two 9' x 8' garage doors and one man door in the front. I figure I will have two 12' wide bays and a 12' wide bike / toolbox storage / hang out area. Does anyone have a set up simular to this? The reason I put this in the gallery area of the forum, is if you had pictures of your set up to offer some ideas that would be great and very appreciated. Please feel free to offer any advise. Thanks in advance.

First you need to determine whether there are any limitations imposed by the local government or homeowners' associatiion. Many people are surprised by what they can't do.

Good advice rcleaver, the only restriction in the community is no mobile homes. All of the houses are newer and the developement is well maintained, so I want to build something that looks good and doesn't take away from anything, but I want to be able to use it too.

always build the biggest you are allowed and can afford you never have enough room. i have a 1100 sq ft house and a 1600 sq ft garage. i get comments all the time like hey look at that little house and that big *** garage.i love it but as soon as you start putting cars and trucks it shrinks quick.
good luck

I am in the process of getting a variance. My city will not allow any outbuilding to be over 50% of the square footage of the house.

Ask the city if there are any restrictions on an "attached" garage. Then ask what is the minimum required to make a garage "attached".

Some members of this board attached their garage with a 4 ft wide roof section, no walls, and the roof did not goto any doors on either building.

That depends on local building codes... I did a 24X34 attached years ago and there weren't any special requirements where I lived.
