Local has an "old American made" jack for sale. Obviously just been painted and he says it's leaking and needs new seals. Claims it's a 5 ton. I do not know my way around jacks much and just need some insight. Thanks in advance.

Yes it a Quality Jack with Parts Readily available, I believe a complete rebuild kit is around $50 and that jack retails for over a 1K New. Check the Wheels and overall condition looking for Rust etc... IF you look on top of the Hydraulic Unit it should have a stamp WA72 + 2ton, WA-73 = 4 ton.

When checking the wheels, should I be checking for splits? Sorry for the novice ? but thats what I am. The paint can suggests that it may be hiding something, rust/etc. Old shop is going outa business and owner told me he would let it go for $125. I'm thinking with a rebuild kit this may lift the heck out of my Landcruiser. What is max lift height asuming it's a 4 ton?

Wouldnt worry about Rust on the Frame, I would check the Pump Piston and Ram Piston on full extension. Its a solid Welded frame and Stout to boot. Wheels? Flat spots, Missing chunks etc... Here is a site that will service you a rebuild kit and has some info on the lift height etc.. I sell rebuild kits but I cant get them any cheaper than these guys as there prices are set in stone.

The link you posted is perfect, thanks. If all checks out then I will buy this puppy. Owner says it leaks prolly from setting for so long but if all looks good then $125 + $50 for repair kit will = Norco going on craigslist.

Dang the luck......someone beat me to it. I'd imagine these don't pop up very frequently. Thanks for the advice, now it seems as though "I have to have one" syndrom has set in so I'll keep looking, and use my Norco in the meantime.
