OK, so I know the basics about electricity (it's shocking
) but I'm far from an expert...on to my problem.
I'm trying to get a smart electrical timer that controls my exterior lights working. The timer has power (display is lit) but it does not control the lights. I can turn the lights on/off from the standard switch in the house. Once the lights are on, turning the timer on/off has no affect on the lights.
The lights are on a circuit with two switches (timer in garage and standard switch in the house) which I believe is called a 3-way circuit. When I opened up the switch panels to investigate, the timer panel has 3 wires and a ground, however the one in the house only has 2 wires and a ground. I thought a three way circuit by definition needed 3 wires, the hot and 2 'travelers'.....
