While traveling 800 miles from home, my HHR stopped on the interstate and I coasted to the shoulder. The transmission acted like it 'popped-out-of-gear' and would not move. I was traveling at 60mph on cruise and started up an incline that caused the transmission to downshift. The tach went to 4000rpm as the cruise tried to maintain 60mph.
I was towed to the GM dealership and was told the transmission is "out" and required a new one.
I traded the HHR for a 2009 Malibu.
And then this happened.
The Malibu ran great for 400 miles toward home, then, at a rest area the DIC chimed 3 times and 'ESC SERVICE - POWER STEERING IS OFF' appeared.
And there was no power steering! I shut the car off and restarted and the fault cleared.
It did it again, luckily, at the next rest area 200 miles later.
Then the scary part..it did it 20 miles from home WHILE DRIVING! I lost power steering!
I googled and found there are several recalls for this, but the dealer said nothing! Were they negligent or was I stupid?

Now my questions are these:

1. What will happen if I stop payment on the check (paid in full) as we checked the bank and they haven't submitted it yet?
2. Should I get help and return the car? How do I get them to backout of the transaction?

It is in my driveway and we do not want to drive it.

Looking for some GJ direction,
Thanks,
John

No interest, eh? Thanks, GJ people.

Well, I'll just update. Took the Malibu to Love Chevrolet in Columbia, SC. Service Writer Eddie took it in and by 3:00 Friday afternoon he had accomplished the following:
1. Assigned a tech
2. Tech read all codes and determined the Steering Circuit Board was defective
3. Eddie called GM District Rep, who examined the car and approved replacement of entire steering column (including electric steering motor and control board) as directed by a service bulletin issued on this incident.
4. Car was ready for pickup at 5:00 Friday evening.

This is why I still like Chevrolet. The most amazing people are in the field doing good despite the questionable stuff going on in upper managment.

I'm going out on a limb here and say that you posted in the wrong subforum. Bring it up in the general garage forum or free parking where a lot of the members hang out. This subforum gets very little traffic.
