if this is in the wrong section please move it.

first off, this is my first post. i discovered this site while designing my workbench and I'm addicted. i love all the cool ideas shared here. i was hoping to borrow some of your advice so i can finish my workbench.

here's what i have so far:

just a basic workbench, 4x4 legs inside a 2x4 frame with 3/4" plywood on top. its 3'x8' and 40 3/4" tall. as you can see, it is sitting against a concrete wall. i want to put up a 4'x8' pegboard and a small section of whiteboard behind it. i would rather have it built into the workbench in case i ever decide to move the bench. the problem is i can't decide how to attach the pegboard to the workbench. at first i thought about screwing in 3 2x4's to the back of the bench. i was going to attach them with the 4" side against the back of the bench, but then i thought over the years, it would warp and bend. then someone suggested that i put the 2" side against the back of the bench. i didn't want to do that because it will space out the bench away from the wall more than i would like.

is there any simpler solution I'm missing?

sorry if this is kinda basic but sometimes its the little details that hold up the whole project.

if this is too confusing i can try and post a drawing.

ps: i will be hanging cordless tools and similar things off it.

I would rip a couple 2x4s and build a framework with them. Make sure to attach them to the bench very securely, they will be holding up all your stuff!

On a related note, a bottom shelf would help keep the workbench from getting too wobbly.

lol on the the warped perspective but this is what I have in mind:

the only question i have on your drawing is do you put the 2" side or the 4" side against the back of the bench?

also, i already put some 2x4's across the legs to brace it. i want to be able to sit at the table but i made it tall because i am 6'5" tall and i wanted it to be tall enough for me to stand and work at it.

thanks for the quick reply.

if you rip them in half you will have stock that is 1.5 x 1.75 (about) so it does not really matter. Just be consistent.

Looking at the drawing again, I would make sure there is some support along the bottom of the peg board (in addition to the top and sides) and 3 or 4 supports in the center if it is going to be 8' wide. That would put the "studs" at 16" - 2' on center.

Welcome to Garage Journal! Well ...just looking at what you've shown so far, the first thing comes to mind is a thin frame to support the Pegboard. It will flex if it isn't supported well. Just set it up on top. Add a couple uprights, just like a dresser mirror. Boom! Bob's yer uncle.
Next thing I think is, scoot the bench over, use the Pegboard on the wall! More room to hang stuff!
And finally. Wouldn't you be better off with slatwall??
Either way. Don't forget to secure the top to the wall also. Heck you could just mount the thing on the wall. Just above the bench. There's lots of options.

just out of curiosity, could i just buy some 2"x2" to serve the same purpose as ripping the 2x4s? or just use 2x4s with the 4" side against the back of the bench for more support?

thanks for the help.

You’ve got good wall section, I’d think French Cleat, a shopmade system to allow easy hanging of many tools, cabinets and misc. that can be reconfigured in just minutes as your needs change. The bench, as mentioned, needs substantial bracing- you’ll discover that the first time you go to wrench or cut anything in a bench vise. A sub shelf (1/2 the depth) also makes better use of under bench storage too.
