I was out beside the garage & I noticed a bird coming out of my vent cap.I took the cap off & they had the whole pipe packed full of nesting material.I had someone tell me you can buy a cage to put over the cap.I've searched many stores & can't find one.Ideas? Thank-you

Galvanized hardware cloth is cheap, durable, and available everywhere. Cut a circle, slit edges, fit over pipe and secure with sheet metal screws?

Not sure what type of vent you have and I have no experience with the Hot Dawg. But on 90 plus furnaces (I believe Hot Dawg makes a sealed combustion unit) adding bird cages to the discharge of the pvc pipe flue can increase the back pressure to the point where the unit senses the increased back pressure, and won't let the unit progress thru its start up cycle (the unit confirms air flow thru the forced exhaust prior to enabling the gas valve for ignition. On high back pressure the unit shuts down to prevent CO poisioning due to improper venting).

From April to October, I cover mine, on the outside, with some window screening material, keeping it on with a bungee cord. It's not pretty but it does the job. Here, the problem is the insects, wasps, hornets, etc will fly in all the way to the blower wheel and build their mud nests. No problems since I started using the screen. I was wary of installing hardware cloth for just the reason posted above.

Birds were nesting in my mom's trailer furnace exhaust pipe which wouldn't let the furnace fire up. Cleaned out all the nesting material & got some of the 1/4" metal mesh from the local farm store and a couple of large hose clamps problem solved.

They will be gone before heating season starts.
Clean it out and cover it with the 1/4 inch screen before you start it this year.
That will keep them out next year.
Last winter I had to pull a squirrel body out of my sisters furnace.
He had sat on the edge of the stack to keep warm, fell asleep and fell into the 8 inch pipe that narrowed down to a 6 inc pipe that narrowed down to a 3 inch right at the furnace.
That is where he was.
She has the 1/4 inch hardware cloth across the top of the chimney now.
