I have a 30 gal 5 HP Craftsman Air Compressor. I had it wired for 110V but plugged it into 220V. I rewired it for 220V but it is dead. There is a reference on the GE motor 5KCR49TN2235X Listing an internal breaker - where is this breaker? Also is it possible I burt the start capacitor out (Makkory 400-480MFD)??

How can I figure out what I damaged??

(PS - I know I know - No need to tell me I was stupid - I know)

The thermal protector is a red button on the end of the motor, which need to be pushed in.

Re: Help - burt out my compressor motor

Yeah u probably burned it up.

And btw is this compressor hardwired or does it have a cord and plug? What about a starter?

If cord and plug then thats wrong...

Re: Help - burt out my compressor motor

If it can be run on 120 volts it's not a 5 HP motor, just another case of Sears preying on consumers.

If it was 5HP, 120V it would take at least a 50 ampere circuit.

Re: Help - burt out my compressor motor

I will look for the red button, There are 2 steps in converting it from and to 110VF asnd 220v. One part is switching the cord, the other part is rewiring a couple of spade connectors. I have done it several times and I just forgot the spade connectors this time. It is about 15 years old.

Any ideas on a replacement motor????

Re: Help - burt out my compressor motor

I have a very similar compressor and I'm not using the motor/pump anymore. I think mine was 125 psi with a slightly smaller "listed" HP for the motor. You're welcome to it if you'd like to just replace rather than repair yours.

It was working fine when I removed it, but the mounting feet are broken. They are cast aluminum, so I imagine they could be easily welded, or you could just remove the motor.

Where are you located? This thing is heavy, so shipping might not make it worthwhile for you to consider. Just PM me your contact info if you're interested and I'll send you the dimensions and other details.

Re: Help - burt out my compressor motor

Go to a Farm supply store to get one, we have Tractor Supply out here. A good old fashioned Hardware store would have carried a motor or two on a shelf. Or do as Modern people Google and Amazon one to your door! I agree with the other poster, it's not 5Hp, so do not Google that size. Why? Because I don't have the nameplate of a 3Hp or a 5HP in front of me but its either 30amps at 120 or it really is 50amps like he posted.
Personally I seem to think he is right!?

No problem -- I'm not using the motor/pump, so you're welcome to it. I have a different brand compressor, so I'm not sure if it would be a straight-up replacement. Let's compare models and see what it makes sense to ship (you might only need the thermal overload switch, and that's a heck of a lot less postage to ship).

Here are the details on my old compressor:

Coleman Powermate Model No. CL0502710
Direct Drive Air Compressor, single stage
115V, 15A, 27 gal. tank, 5 HP (peak)
95 - 125 psi working pressure
8.2 cfm @ 40 psi
5.6 cfm @ 90 psi

And here's the motor:

MagneTek Century AC Motor
Compressor duty, thermally protected
Part No. 8-194163-01
3450 rpm, 120V, 15A

Let me know how your model compares and I'll PM you my email address

I opened up the motor and checked out the thermal overload switch. I'll take some pictures of it.

This is the closest think I could find to it on the web:
B381_connection.gif

The thermal overload switch is on the reverse side of that circuit board.

Here's the motor nameplate:

Re: Help - burt out my compressor motor

Yes - this is correct. It is exactly what is inside. There is a cord difference as well. I "know" this because I have done is a few times. It was tripping a breaker and I knew that 220V would stop that. I wired the cord and forgot about the motor side (A mental lapse). Arggg. I also see no smoke, no motion and no red button. I think the breaker may be in a small box on the power switch.
