I got a used heavy as heck card file cabinet for all the fasteners I bought from Alex. Might have to get another to hold the grade 8 though:thumbup:

Anyway, each drawer is 26.5" deep x 7.5" wide x 3.75" high. Can't find any sort of pre-made akro-mills type bin from <anywhere> that'll fit, in any combination of sizes (they're all too high).

I thought about small cardboard boxes, but can't find anything there either.

I've tried McMaster, MSC, Grainger, ULine, Global Industrial.

Looking for something inexpensive and effective.

Can't use my bolts if I can't find 'em. :(

I'm using ones from these: http://www.schallercorp.com/products.htm

Here's what I have. The ones for washers/nuts etc., I screwed a little wood divider in.

Hey guys :D

I have one of those WWII era cardfiles also. While I don't keep bolts in it, I've found that some of the cardboard boxes that I use to ship bolts can be cut down to fit perfectly within the drawers. They were made by Fastpack, but it looks like they have since been discontinued (can't find them on the website anymore).

The cheapie little red bins from menards will fit if you shave them down a bit.

Will a flat plastic oil jug fit?
If so, just cut out one side and you have a tray.

I have selves full of them, and I use them for collecting all the little pieces when I am taking something apart.

I use MOOG and raybestos boxes from work (the corrugated cardboard ones) they work awesome, different sizes and shapes.

While I do have a 2'X3' metal box with drawers for regular misc. bolts and what-not, I've got another cheap system going.

I've got a couple of those gladiator workbench cabinets with the top drawer; each is more or less dedicated to a particular thing. One for bike bits and parts, one for particular items for the 4x4, etc.

I save the plastic containers that my take-out chinese food come in, as well as the one that food stores sell mac salad in. They're pretty strong for what they are. Just lay out the bits in a series of these trays in the drawer. Open the drawer, look down, and see everything at a glance I might need for that particular type of project. By compartmentalizing everything, I pretty much know where something might be for any given project; saves a lot of time trying to find stuff.

Plus, since I don't have a parts washer, the containers close and seal real well, so I can scrub or soak small parts in them too, even giving them the shake and bake treatment with some simple green and such. Can be recycled when nasty.

But then again, at my dad's place he's still got the canning jars with the lids bolted to a wood plank over the bench. That system is still pretty hard to beat, IMO.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the replies. Ordered enough for a drawer's worth of trays from Schaller -- just to see.

Still cardboard boxes cut down that prev. held fasteners might be the way to go, can't beat the price. But was looking for something more durable, and these trays might be it.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the replies.

Ordered enough trays from Schaller for a drawer. They're a bit expensive, but they look to be quality.

I thought of cutting down old fastener boxes, but to get them exact and whether they'd be durable in the long term, I don't know.

I got spoiled by some of the Durham cabinets I've bought :)

Nissan: what sizes of the red bins do you have? I've got the 3 x 3 x 2 3/4 and 3 x 6 x 2 3/4, so far.

I was thinking of doing all red for Grade 5 and Grade 8 in blue.

I have a lot more productive things I could do than sort fasteners, but for now, I'm getting to like it :)

All mine are the 3x6x1 3/4.
