I'm new to this vise enthusiasm so I'm hoping someone can diagnose and recommend a fix to this problem (at least I think it's a problem) before I buy it so I know what I'm in for.

As you see in the image, when opening the vise, the collar pulls out. It's fine when tightening. Is doesn't seem to be just a matter of tightening the collar. Could it be an indication of a more involved issue?

It's a Chas. Parker 206 if that matters. Thanks for any insight.

The collar looks broken. It should hold the leadscrew totally inside the recess part of the dynamic jaw as the jaw is opened.

That part can probably be fabricated but finding an original replacement can be tough.

The collar takes no load on closing, only there to pull the jaw forward when you unload the main screw. It appears to be either broken or a poor replacement for the original, hard to say from the pic. Odds of finding another are slim to none, so unless you or someone you know can fab up a proper replacement (no, it probably wouldn't be that hard for a good machinist) you might be out of luck.

here is a pic of my 204. although its not a great photo you can kind of see what I mean

The collar on your 206 is broken. Its supposed to fully enclose the lead screw

If the price is right I would still jump on it.

I paid $60 for mine in this condition

Edit after thinking about it bit and getting off my lazy *** I went and checked my vise. The garter (collar)does not go all the way around. Its a moon shape. Something is causing yours to not sit flush

That collar may not be broken, it looks like someone has shimmed under the screw and the collar is not able to be tightened down fully.

Take the collar off, back the screw out and show what is in there.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Outlaw -- It's not in my possession so I can't examine more thoroughly (considering buying long distance).
Srmofo's looks thicker at the attach point. I'm going to verify that it's original.

Thanks again!

Outlaw -- Great call; it's a lock washer! Could the problem be as simple as not being able to tighten it flush to the body?
